TO BE THE GREATEST
LUKE 22: 24-30
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you
should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

The establishment of teachings contradictory to the customs or
norms of his day was practically a benchmark in Jesus’ ministry. The passage we
read today in the Gospel of Luke refers to one of the greatest challenges the
new life in Christ presents: to discover the true meaning of greatness in our service
to others. At first glance this would seem to be a contradiction, but Jesus
himself lived it to demonstrate that yes, it was possible. To our “natural instinct”
to be superior to others, Jesus counterpoints with the duty to serve them, and
therefore to brilliantly illustrate the true meaning “of being great.”
We shouldn’t spare any opportunity to exemplify this teaching of
Jesus. This is really key to solving the crucial problems of humanity, such as
the inequality of wealth or the contradictions between disparate generations.
Don’t delay, go out into the world and offer your gifts; make
your abilities available to those around you. Make serving others a way of life,
a way of relating, that way we will recognize God more clearly, more intimately.
Alongside this, furthermore, we will feel the immense pleasure of sharing,
helping, being in solidarity, listening with humility while recognizing our
faults…This will be our true strength!
Prayer: How good it is God that
you illuminate us through Jesus Christ; that you invite us to look far beyond selfish
sentiments; you open us to others in service and communion. Amen.

Ser el mayor
Lucas 22:24-30
Mas no así a vosotros, sino que sea el mayor entre
vosotros como el más joven, y el que dirige como el que sirve.

Fue prácticamente una norma en el ministerio de Jesús
el establecer enseñanzas que estuvieran en contradicción con las costumbres o
normas de su época. El pasaje que hemos leído hoy en el evangelio de Lucas se
refiere a uno de los más grandes retos que presenta la nueva vida en Cristo:
descubrir en el servicio a los demás el verdadero sentido de grandeza. Esto que
a primera vista parecería una contradicción, Jesús mismo lo vivió para
demostrar que sí era posible. A nuestros instintos “naturales” de estar por
encima de otros y otras, Jesús antepone el deber de servirles, y para ello pone
ejemplos que ilustran magistralmente el verdadero sentido que para él tenía
“ser mayor”.
No debemos escatimar ninguna oportunidad para vivir esta enseñanza de
Jesús. Esta es realmente la clave de solución para grandes problemas de la
humanidad como la desigual distribución de las riquezas o las contradicciones
entre diferentes generaciones.
No nos detengamos, avancemos por la vida brindando nuestros dones, poniendo
nuestras capacidades en función de quienes nos rodean. Hagamos del servir a los
demás una forma de vida, un sentido de relación, y así reconoceremos a Dios más
nítidamente, de manera más cercana. Y junto con esto, además sentiremos el
inmenso placer de compartir, ayudar, ser solidarios, escuchar con humildad,
reconocer nuestras debilidades… ¡Esa será nuestra verdadera fortaleza!
Oración: Qué bueno, Dios, que tú nos iluminas a través de Jesucristo, que tú nos
invitas a mirar más allá de sentimientos egoístas, que tú nos abres a los demás
en servicio y comunión. Amén.
