THE
MAN WITH THE WATER PITCHER
MARK 14: 12-16
And he sent two of
his disciples and said to them,
“Go
into the city and a man will meet you
carrying a pitcher of water.
Follow him”.

In the liturgical calendar today’s date is reserved to celebrate
and reflect upon the essence of the Eucharist, the Holy Supper for us today. In
this context I’m particularly thinking of today's Gospel passage which involves a character who has always drawn my attention. I
refer to the porter, a man carrying a pitcher of water whom Jesus asks his
disciples to follow in order to discover the location where the last supper
would be held.
I’ve mused that this person is a sort of symbol for Jesus
himself. Firstly, he appears at the gathering of the disciples (God takes the
initiative to manifest himself with us through Jesus Christ); he’s a water
carrier, the symbol of the abundant life God gives us (Jesus is living water);
he’s a simple servant (Jesus gave this
example of service to all); he’s the guide to the owner of the house where the
banquet will take place (the guide implies God); and he secures the final
participation in a banquet (the banquet of the kingdom of God).
Each time we come to the table of the Lord may we remember that
an ordinary and anonymous person pointed the way to such a sacred moment. Let
us make our lives Eucharistic, where sacredness springs forth at each footstep.
Prayer: Lord, may each moment
in communion with our neighbor be a Holy Supper for us. Amen.

marcos 14:12-16
Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos. Les dijo:

En el calendario litúrgico se reserva la fecha de hoy
para celebrar y reflexionar sobre el sentido de la eucaristía, la Santa Cena,
para nosotros hoy. Y en particular el pasaje del Evangelio que el leccionario
nos propone hoy contiene un personaje que siempre ha llamado mi atención. Me
refiero al hombre portador de un cántaro de agua al que Jesús pide que sigan
para dar con el lugar donde celebraría la última cena con sus discípulos. He
pensado que este personaje es una especie de símbolo del propio Jesucristo. En
primer lugar sale al encuentro de los discípulos (Dios toma la iniciativa de
encontrarse con nosotros a través de Jesucristo); es portador de un cántaro de
agua, que es el símbolo de la vida en abundancia que Dios nos da (Jesús es el
agua de vida); es un sencillo siervo (Jesús dio ejemplo de servicio a todos y a
todas…); guía hasta donde está el dueño de la casa donde tendrá lugar el
banquete (el dueño simboliza a Dios); y propicia la participación final en un
banquete (el banquete del reino de Dios).
Qué cada vez que acudamos a la mesa del Señor también recordemos que una
persona sencilla y anónima dio lugar a tan sagrado momento. Hagamos de nuestra
vida una vida eucarística, donde la sacralidad nos brote a cada paso.
Oración: Señor, que cada momento de comunión con el prójimo, sea una Santa Cena
para nosotros. Amén.
