GOOD FRUITS
LUKE 6: 43-45
Because each tree is
known for its fruit;
figs are not gathered from
thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
The ethical aspect was something central to the teachings of
Jesus of Nazareth. That is: How to act in a manner pleasing to God. Good
behavior, according to our Teacher, isn’t something that can be feigned, rather
something that one needs to live.
We often have to battle false or even hypocritical behavior that has little or nothing to do with the invitation from Jesus to be good, authentically good. When this kind of behavior comes from people around us we should
ask for God’s wisdom, so we can know how to respond to falsehoods without
reacting violently; and that instead, we can determine what the perfect will of
God is: to be sincere and forthright.
But it’s more complex when it’s we ourselves who adopt behavior
we recognize as hypocritical, such as when we flatter someone without merit;
when we don’t reply truthfully and justly in order to maintain some privilege;
when we join the crowd in some opinion, even when we don’t believe it, and when
we show agreement only in order to avoid compromising ourselves…
Today’s text reminds us that there’s no ambiguity in the message
of salvation. If we’re really Christians then we need to act as such. Do good
works, cultivate peace, love, and justice; serve your neighbor as you would
yourself; care for God’s creation. Those are the good fruits of the good trees that
God invites us to be.
Prayer: Lord, may we be trees
that bear good fruits, not conceited boasters. Amen.

Buenos frutos
Lucas 6:43-45
Porque cada árbol se conoce por su fruto;
pues no se cosechan higos de los espinos, ni de las
zarzas se vendimian uvas.

Algo central en las enseñanzas de Jesús de Nazaret fue
el aspecto ético, es decir, cómo actuar de manera que agrademos a Dios. La
buena conducta, según nuestro Maestro, no es algo que se pueda aparentar, sino
algo que hay que vivir.
En muchas ocasiones tenemos que lidiar con conductas falsas y hasta
hipócritas que poco o nada tienen que ver con la invitación a ser buenos,
auténticamente buenos, que hace Jesús. Cuando
esas conductas provienen de personas que nos rodean, debemos pedir
sabiduría a Dios para saber cómo responder a tales falsedades sin que
reaccionemos violentamente, y que más bien podamos persuadir cuál es la
voluntad perfecta de Dios: que seamos sinceros y transparentes. Pero más
complejo resulta cuando somos nosotros mismos los que adoptamos conductas que
podemos reconocer como hipócritas: cuando halagamos a alguien sin que lo
merezca, cuando no respondemos veraz y justamente por tal de mantener algún
privilegio, cuando afirmamos algo junto a la mayoría aunque no coincidamos con
ella solo por no comprometernos…
El texto de hoy nos recuerda que no hay ambigüedad en el mensaje de
Salvación. Si somos realmente cristianos y cristianas, actuemos como tal.
Hagamos el bien, cultivemos la paz, el amor y la justicia, sirvamos al prójimo
como a nosotros mismos, tengamos cuidado de la Creación de Dios. Esos son los
buenos frutos de los buenos árboles que nos invita Dios a ser.
Oración: Señor, que seamos árboles que dan buenos frutos, y
no hojarasca envanecida. Amén.
