WHO IS THIS?

MATTHEW 21:1-11

“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’”

Matthew 21:10

This is a question that resounds throughout all of the history related in the gospels.  Who is this who can cast out demons and heal people?  Who is this who eats and drinks with commoners? Who is this who dares to place prostitutes and sinners above others? Who is this who heals on the Sabbath? Who is this who does such things? … Even Jesus himself asks his disciples: “And you, who do you say that I am?”

The answer to this question comes almost in the form of an identity card, because not only does it reveal his name and his prophetic vocation, but it also reaffirms that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee. 

Everything about Jesus was disconcerting to the law scholars, to the powerful religious and political leaders.  A teacher who serves his disciples and washes their feet?  A prophet who comes from Galilee?  Hmmm…Could anything good come from a place so far away from Jerusalem?  A king who enters the city atop an animal of burden and surrounded by screaming people, armed with cloaks and palm branches instead of an army.  And the problem is:  we still don’t understand.  The question “Who is this?” continues to disconcert us.  The son of God, devastated, unjustly assassinated?

God grant us the ability to give true testimony to the presence of Jesus in our lives when we ask ourselves the question:  Who is this?

¿QUIÉN ES ESTE?

MATEO 21:1-11

“Cuando entró en Jerusalén, toda la ciudad

se conmovió, diciendo: ¿Quién es este?”

Mateo 21:10

Esta es una pregunta que resuena a través de toda la historia contada en los evangelios. ¿Quién es este que echa fuera demonios y sana a la gente? ¿Quién es este que come y bebe con publicanos? ¿Quién es este que se atreve a poner por delante a rameras y a pecadores? ¿Quién es este que sana en sábado? ¿Quién es este que hace tales cosas?...  Hasta el propio Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos: ¿Y ustedes, quién dicen que soy?

La respuesta a esta pregunta llega como la ficha de un carnet de identidad, pues no solo nos revela su nombre y su vocación profética, sino que nos reafirma de dónde salió Jesús: Galilea.

Todo en Jesús desconcertaba a los doctos de la ley, a los poderes religiosos y políticos: un maestro que sirve a sus discípulos y lava sus pies, un profeta que viene de Galilea, hum... ¿de ahí podría salir algo bueno, tan lejos de Jerusalén? Un rey que entra a la ciudad en un animal de carga y rodeado de gente gritona, armada con mantos y palmas y no de un ejército. Y es que todavía no entendemos. La pregunta ¿quién es éste? nos sigue desconcertando, ¿el hijo de Dios, azotado, asesinado injustamente?

Quiera Dios que al preguntarnos ¿quién es este? podamos dar testimonio verdadero de la presencia de Jesús en nuestras vidas.

Oración: Bendito Jesús, que nuestra vida muestre a otros quién eres verdaderamente. Amén
