DEFENDING THE WRONG POWER

JOHn 18:19-24

“When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck his face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.”

John 18:22

Today we encounter a character that is barely mentioned in the reflections concerning our Lord’s suffering: the bailiff to Annas, the high priest. When Jesus was interrogated about his preaching and his doctrines, he replied with precise and irreverent words to the power represented in Annas: “…Why question me?  Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”  This is the reply that unleashed the gesture of violence in the bailiff who, without giving it a second thought, struck the Teacher in the face.  Instead of judging this man, it would be more appropriate to judge ourselves when we incur attitudes such as his. The “instinctive” slap across the face that the bailiff gives Jesus symbolically reminds us of the moment in which we side with the unjust powers of this world. We are that bailiff when, knowing that a child is right, we ignore humility and simplicity and unjustly exercise our authority; we are that bailiff when we do not defend just causes in order to gain material or relational privileges.  We are that bailiff when we favor and even adulate the person who supposedly has the most to grant us later in return. 

May this Holy Week serve to renew our favoritism towards the power that heals and restores.  Let us not fall into the same trap as Annas’s bailiff: in support of a power representative of hate and death.

Prayer: Thank you, God, because through Jesus you showed us that the true pathway is that of justice and of peace.  Thank you for teaching us what should be the true power to exercise in the world:  the power of love. Amen.

defendiendo al poder equivocado

Juan 18:19-24

“Cuando Jesús hubo dicho esto, uno de los alguaciles,

que estaba allí, le dio una bofetada, diciendo:

¿Así respondes al sumo sacerdote?”

Nos encontramos hoy con un personaje apenas mencionado en las reflexiones acerca de la pasión de nuestro Señor: el alguacil sirviente de Anás, el sacerdote. Al Jesús ser interrogado acerca de sus prédicas y doctrinas, responde con palabras precisas e irreverentes al poder representado en Anás: …“¿por qué me preguntas a mí? pregunta a los que han oído, qué yo les haya hablado, he aquí ellos saben lo que yo he dicho”. Es esta respuesta la que desata el gesto de violencia en el alguacil que, sin pensarlo dos veces, abofetea al Maestro. Más apropiado que juzgar a este hombre, sería juzgarnos a nosotros mismos cuando incurrimos en actitudes como la suya. La bofetada “instintiva” que le propina el alguacil a Jesús, nos recuerda simbólicamente el momento en que nos parcializamos a favor de los poderes injustos de este mundo. Somos aquel alguacil cuando, sabiendo con razón a algún pequeñito, obviamos la humildad y la sencillez y hacemos cumplir nuestra voluntad; somos aquel alguacil cuando por ganar privilegios materiales o de relaciones no defendemos las justas causas. Somos aquel alguacil cuando nos parcializamos y hasta adulamos al que más tiene para obtener luego, supuestamente, su favor. Que esta Semana Santa sirva para renovar nuestros votos a favor del poder que sana y restaura. No caigamos en la trampa en que cayó el alguacil de Anás: apoyar a un poder que representaba el odio y la muerte.

Oración: Gracias Dios, porque a través de Jesús nos mostraste que el verdadero camino es el de la justicia y la paz. Gracias por enseñarnos cuál debe ser el verdadero poder a vivir en el mundo: el poder de amar. Amén.
