SAVED BY GOOD WORKS?

EPHESIANS 2:8-9

“all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…”

Isaiah 64:6

Many people think that good works will make them worthy of salvation and that when they appear before God, God will put their good actions into one pan of the scales and their bad actions into the other, with their fate being decided by the weight of the one over the other. But who can calculate or compare good and evil conduct? If we look at them in the light of God’s Holiness, surely they will have a great weight.

Now, what value will our good works have, even if they are religious? Frequently they are soiled by pride or by our secret desire to be congratulated for them. In reality, doing good works carries no merit in the eyes of God. Good behavior is normal conduct in God’s presence; it doesn’t erase our sins or compensate for poor behavior. If you cheat a friend, you have sinned; if you take what isn’t rightfully yours, you have sinned; if you tolerate violence, you have sinned—even if you do good works.

Nevertheless, brothers and sisters, beyond the reality of sin, which dogs us both within and without; there is something which encourages us in our life of faith. Good works must be the result of a true transformation and only thus can any doubt about the intent of our actions be cleared away. We must trust that God will help us overcome the temptation to do good  in order to appear good, and will strengthen us to refrain from doing ill so that we may be a living testimony wherever we may go.

Prayer: Lord, don’t let us fall into the temptation of thinking that we are good because of what we do.  Help us to find Jesus.  Amen.

¿SALVARSE MEDIANTE BUENAS OBRAS?

EFESIOS 2:8-9

“Todos nosotros somos como suciedad…”

Isaías 64:6

Muchas personas piensan que las buenas obras las hacen merecedoras de la salvación, y que cuando comparezcan ante Dios, este pondrá las buenas acciones en uno de los platillos de la balanza y las malas en el otro. Según el peso de unas y de otras, se decidirá la suerte eterna. Pero ¿quién puede calcular o comparar las buenas y malas conductas? Si las miramos ante la luz de la santidad de Dios, seguramente tendrían un peso bien grande.

Ahora ¿Qué valor tienen nuestras buenas obras, incluso si son religiosas? A menudo están estropeadas por el orgullo o el secreto deseo de que nuestros semejantes nos feliciten por ellas.

Hacer buenas obras no es en realidad algo meritorio a los ojos de Dios. Las buenas acciones son una conducta normal ante Dios, no borran en nada nuestros pecados y no compensan las malas acciones. Si alguien engaña a un amigo ha pecado, el que toma lo que no le es lícito, ha pecado; el que es indulgente con la violencia ha pecado… aunque haya hecho buenas obras.

Sin embargo, hermano y hermana, más allá de la realidad del pecado que nos acosa desde adentro o desde afuera, hay algo que nos alienta en nuestra vida de fe. Las buenas obras deben ser consecuencia de una transformación verdadera y sólo así quedará despejada la duda acerca de las intenciones de nuestro proceder. Confiemos en Dios para que él nos haga superar la tentación de hacer buenas obras para aparentar bondad. Y que él nos dé las fuerzas suficientes para no hacer el mal y ser testimonio vivo dondequiera que vayamos.

Oración: Señor, no nos dejes caer en la tentación de creernos buenos por lo que hacemos. Ayúdanos a encontrar a Jesús. Amén.
