HOW SHOULD WE READ THE BIBLE?

ACTS 8:30-31

“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”

It’s important for everyone to read the Bible. But do we know how to make good use of its reading? If you don’t know the Bible, which is the word of God, and want to read it, it’s to be expected that you won’t understand everything at the offset. It’s advisable to begin with the New Testament. Ask God for illumination, since a reading of the Sacred Scriptures is more than a literary or cultural approach, it’s a spiritual experience that can change your life in a profound way. Pass over the chapters that seem to be difficult to you; you’ll return to read them later. Stress the simple passages whose message is more direct.

 Avoid rejecting what doesn’t seem logical. Don’t cede to the temptation of inventing an explanation. Distrust the hurried deductions that certain people offer, pretending that they’re the only admissible ones. Those who elaborate those doctrines pick biblical passages from here and there and organize them according to their ideas or convictions.  

  

The Bible forms a unit, and the parts that comprise it are complementary.  The long periods of history which are included set before us a great diversity of theologies, literary styles, contextual situations…but none of these works against the spiritual harmony and the universal sense of the messages that make up the Bible.

Don’t seek confirmation of what you have always believed when you read the Bible; rather, seek out the truth within it. If you’re honest in your search, you won’t be deceived.

Prayer:  Lord, guide my steps in the reading of your Word, to understand it according to your will. Amen.

¿CÓMO LEER LA BIBLIA?

HECHOS 8:30-31

Para todos es importante leer la Biblia. ¿Pero sabemos cómo sacar provecho de su lectura?

Si usted no conoce la Biblia, que es la Palabra de Dios, y desea leerla, es normal que no comprenda todo desde el principio. Es aconsejable que comience por el Nuevo Testamento. Pídale a Dios que lo ilumine, pues una lectura de la Sagrada Escritura es más que un acercamiento literario o cultural, es una experiencia espiritual que puede cambiar su vida de manera profunda. Pase rápidamente los capítulos que le parezcan difíciles, los volverá a leer más tarde. Enfatice en los pasajes sencillos, cuyo mensaje es más directo.

Evite rechazar lo que no le parezca lógico. No ceda a la tentación de inventarse una explicación. Desconfíe de las deducciones apresuradas que ciertas personas le proponen, pretendiendo que son las únicas admisibles. Los que elaboran esas doctrinas aíslan aquí y allá algunos pasajes bíblicos y las organizan según sus ideas o sus conveniencias. La Biblia forma una unidad y las partes que la componen se complementan entre sí. Los largos períodos de la historia que comprende nos ponen ante una gran diversidad de teologías, estilos literarios, situaciones de contexto… Pero ninguna de tales razones atenta contra la armonía espiritual y el sentido universal de los mensajes que La Biblia abarca.

No busque en la Biblia una confirmación de lo que siempre ha pensado, sino busque en ella la verdad. Si es honesto en su búsqueda, no quedará decepcionado.
