MORE THAN JUST A FLOOD 

MATTHEW 28:16-20

… In this world you will have trouble.

The flood was a hot topic among the many narratives in the Old Testament (Genesis 7:1 – 21). And it was the first sign of God’s power over the world he created. But luckily for us, the flood was not the end, rather an opportunity for rectification. Itis not advisable to see it as an end, rather as a new beginning.

Through all his proclamations Louis XVI, king of France from 1774 to 1791, established a reign so disastrous for the country that he ended up being guillotined in 1792. The historians point out that in a mortuary chapel he expressed, “after me, the flood.” He was neither a prophet nor a clairvoyant; he knew what he was leaving behind.

We live, aware or unconsciously, constructing or destroying the world that God bequeathed us. At times, our control over the destruction is such that it seems to us that Jesus needn’t do anything in dealing with our reality. We consider ourselves to be “the best.”

But in the middle of the chaos we’ve produced, the flood appears to be more than an end, rather like a new beginning. Jesus is reconstructing a new ark, an ark of hope.

Prayer: Oh God permit us to confront this new life you have promised us, and that the flood may be a new beginning. Amen.

ALGO MÁS QUE EL DILUVIO

MATEO 28: 16-20

… En el mundo tendréis aflicción;

pero confiad yo he vencido al mundo.

El diluvio fue un acontecimiento más entre los muchos narrados en el Antiguo Testamento (Gen.7:1.21) y fue la primera señal del poder de Dios sobre el mundo que había creado. Pero por suerte para nosotros, el diluvio no fue el fin, sino una oportunidad de rectificación. No es aconsejable verlo como final, sino como un nuevo comienzo.

Luis XVI Rey de Francia (1774-1791) desarrolló un reinado tan desastroso para el país en todos los órdenes, que terminó en la guillotina en 1792. Los historiadores señalan que en capilla ardiente expresó: “Después de mí el diluvio”. No fue ni profeta ni adivino, sabía lo que dejaba atrás.

Consciente o inconscientemente vivimos construyendo o destruyendo el mundo que Dios nos legó. A veces es tanto nuestro control sobre la destrucción que nos parece que Jesús nada tiene que hacer al enfrentar nuestra realidad. Nos consideramos “los mejores”.

Pero en medio del caos que hemos producido, el diluvio se nos presenta más que como un final, como un nuevo comienzo. Jesús está reconstruyendo una nueva arca, la de la esperanza.

Oración: Permítenos, oh Dios, enfrentar esta nueva vida que tú nos has prometido y que el diluvio sea un nuevo comienzo. Amén.
