WORKING AND EATING

2 THESSALONIANS 3:6-12

Such people we commend and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. (NIV)

2 Thessalonians 3:12

Those of us who are older remember that years ago we often found “if you don’t work, you don’t eat” written on the walls; and we thought that was a phrase from the heat of the moment we were living in.

The phrase is very old. When Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica, he was addressing the community about a specific situation that church was experiencing. Some thought that Christ’s return was imminent, and it would be better for him to find them praying. But that created a problem, because it was one more burden to sustain while tending to the needy.

Today we find a new dimension of Paul’s recommendation, and it concerns our concept of Christian stewardship. God has put us in this world as stewards to sustain the work of creation. In letters to the church at Thessalonica Paul also advises: “pray without ceasing.” We understand therefore that our whole life is one continuous prayer to God.

Indeed, work is not a punishment created by God, but an opportunity to fulfill our purpose. With your work you are sharing the Gospel. And remember that you are accountable for your work not to a boss who will rate your performance, but to God.

Prayer: Lord, help me to understand that work is an important part of my Christian life. Amen.

A los tales mandamos y exhortamos por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que trabajando sosegadamente, coman su propio pan.

Los que tenemos algunos años ya, recordaremos que hace años encontrábamos muchas veces escrita en las paredes el lema: “el que no trabaja, no coma”; y llegábamos a pensar que era una frase al calor de los momentos que se estaban viviendo.

La frase es muy antigua. Cuando Pablo escribe a la Iglesia de Tesalónica se lo dice a la comunidad, por una situación muy específica que se estaba viviendo en esa Iglesia. Algunos pensaban que la venida del Señor era inminente, y que era mejor que los encontrara orando. Pero esto creaba un problema, porque era una carga más que tenían que enfrentar a la hora de sostener a los necesitados.

Hoy descubrimos otra dimensión en la recomendación de Pablo, y tiene que ver con nuestro concepto de la mayordomía cristiana. Dios nos ha colocado en el mundo como mayordomos para sostener la obra de la creación. En las cartas a la Iglesia de Tesalónica Pablo también le aconseja: “orad sin cesar”. Entendemos así que toda nuestra vida, es una oración constante a Dios.

Sí, el trabajo no es un castigo que hizo Dios, sino que es una forma de realización vocacional. Con tu trabajo también estás evangelizando. Y piensa que de él vas tener que rendir cuentas, no a un jefe que calificará tu idoneidad; sino, que rendirás cuenta al Señor.

Oración: Señor, ayúdame a entender el trabajo como parte importante en mi vida cristiana. Amén.
