THE STORY OF THE HUMMINGBIRD

ROMANS 2:5-11

…eternal life to those who look for glory, honor and

 immortality based on their patient good work.

Paul says it clearly in today’s text: perseverance in good works is one of the keys to understand ourselves as favored by God. This reminds me of a story which a friend shared with me recently and that I now share with you:

The Guaraní indigenous people tell a story that one day there was a huge fire in the forest. All of the animals fled in fear, for it was a terrible fire.  Soon, the jaguar saw a hummingbird passing over his head…in the opposite direction, that is to say, heading toward the fire. He thought this very strange, but he didn’t want to stop him. In no time he saw him pass by again, this time in the other direction.  He observed the bird come and go multiple times, until he finally decided to ask the little bird because his behavior seemed bizarre. 

“What are you doing, hummingbird?” he asked.

“I am going to the lake”, responded the bird, “I drink water with my beak and throw it on the fire to put out the blaze.”

The jaguar smiled. “Are you crazy?” he said. “Do you think you will be able to put out the fire with only your little beak?”

 “Well,” the hummingbird responded, “I do my part…”  And after saying this, he headed for more water from the lake. 

This story encourages us to also do our part amid life’s challenges. Many voices and gestures will induce us to give up, or to do nothing, but the Scripture calls us to do everything with good will to receive glory, honor, and peace. 

Prayer: Our good God, let us not rest from doing good.  Give us energy to persevere to the end.  Amen.

LA HISTORIA DEL COLIBRÍ

ROMANOS 2:5-11

… vida eterna a los que, perseverando en bien hacer,

buscan gloria y honra e inmortalidad.

Romanos 2:7

Como bien expresa el apóstol Pablo en el texto que hoy leemos, ser perseverantes en buenas obras es una de las claves para reconocernos favorecidos por Dios. Esto me recuerda una historia que hace unos días, un amigo compartía conmigo y que hoy pongo a su disposición: Cuentan los guaraníes que un día hubo un enorme incendio en la selva. Todos los animales huían despavoridos, pues era un fuego terrible. De pronto, el jaguar vio pasar sobre su cabeza al colibrí… en dirección contraria, es decir, hacia el fuego. Le extrañó sobremanera, pero no quiso detenerse. Al instante, lo vio pasar de nuevo, esta vez en su misma dirección. Pudo observar este ir y venir repetidas veces, hasta que decidió preguntar al pajarillo, pues le parecía un comportamiento harto estrafalario:
¿Qué haces colibrí?, le preguntó.
Voy al lago -respondió el ave- tomo agua con el pico y la echo en el fuego para apagar el incendio. El jaguar se sonrió.
¿Estás loco? - le dijo. ¿Crees que vas a conseguir apagarlo con tu pequeño pico tú solo?
Bueno- respondió, el colibrí- yo hago mi parte… Y tras decir esto, se marchó a por más agua al lago.

Esta historia nos anima a hacer también nosotros nuestra parte en medio de los retos de la vida. Muchas serán las voces y los gestos que nos invitan a detenernos, a no hacer nada, pero tal y como nos convoca la Escritura cada cosa que hagamos de buena voluntad, tendrá como galardón la gloria, la honra y la paz.

Oración: Dios bueno, que no descansemos en hacer el bien. Danos fuerzas para perseverar hasta el fin. Amén.
