HOPE

PSALM 42:4-11

At least there is hope for a tree,

if it is cut down it will sprout again,

and its new shoots will not fail. (NIV)

A disheartened person has lost his sense of struggle. And perhaps even worse: the energy to strive. This is when it’s necessary to make him grow, even through the hopelessness, and to overcome despair. That is hope; and it’s very difficult to raise hope in a disheartened person. Such a person doesn’t need pity. Pity is the response to despair. One must take despair to the fight in order to shake it in its shame, take on the desperation and conquer it, and in this way, retake the fundamental valor of his life.

This struggle will not place its guarantees in personal merits or strengths, neither in the qualities or talents of one’s nature. The guarantee comes through something much more profound and enduring. Through the mystery of our own lives. My life has a meaning. Living it is what permits me to be. That deep conviction is an act of faith in God, the giver of life, it’s something that drives us to go forward.

To believe that my life has a mystery that can be fulfilled. To know that this exists, and that, although I don’t see it, it’s the only thing that gives real support to my life and to my options; it’s something that makes me overcome hopelessness. With faith let us sow the furrow of love so that little by little it keeps hope growing.

Anyone can be a sower.

Prayer: thank you, Lord, because you are hope. Thank you because your reassurance and the constant presence of the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to continue. Amen.

LA ESPERANZA

SALMO 42:4-11

Cuando se corta un árbol, queda aún la esperanza de que

retoñe y de que jamás le falten renuevos. 

Job 14:7

El desanimado ha perdido el sentido de la lucha. Tal vez peor: las fuerzas para luchar. Entonces es cuando es necesario hacerlo crecer hasta la desesperación, y la desesperación superada, eso es la esperanza. Es muy difícil suscitar la esperanza en un desanimado. Un desanimado no necesita de la lástima. La lástima es el responso sobre el desanimado. Al desanimado hay que llevarlo a la lucha, a fin de que, sacudido en su vergüenza, asuma la desesperación y la supere, y así reconquista el valor fundamental de su vida.

Esta lucha no pondrá sus garantías en las fuerzas personales, ni en las dotes de su naturaleza. La garantía se pone sobre algo mucho más profundo y más perdurable. Sobre el misterio de nuestra propia vida. Mi vida tiene un sentido. El vivirlo es lo que me permitirá ser. Esa convicción profunda es un acto de fe en el Dios dador de la vida, es algo que nos impulsa a caminar.

Creer que mi vida tiene un misterio que puede ser cumplido. Saber que eso existe y que, aunque no lo veo es lo único que da apoyo real a mi vida y a mis opciones, es algo que me hace superar la desesperación. Sembremos con fe en el surco del amor para que poco a poco vaya creciendo la esperanza.

Quien quiera puede ser sembrador.

Oración: Gracias Señor, porque tú eres nuestra esperanza. Gracias porque tu consuelo y la presencia constante del Espíritu Santo nos da fuerzas para continuar. Amén.
