WHEN WERE YOU CONVERTED?

ACTS 26:9-18

I, the Lord, have called you… (NIV)

 Isaiah 42:6

I recall that in my youth, in the church where I grew up, the common question for everybody was “When were you converted?” The question meant “When did you find Jesus Christ?”

I have the impression that this question is no longer used in the church; now it might be, “When did you join the church?”

One definition of “conversion” is: “To transform someone or something into something different from what it was.” Finding Jesus Christ is truly a radical change in a person’s life. The other question, about the date of membership, seems more like we are joining some club.

It is true that some of us cannot say, like Paul, the date and place where we found Christ, because the encounter may have occurred during a long journey. It is true that regardless of when the encounter occurred, it gives rise to questions: “Who are you, Lord?” and “What do you require of me?”

When we find Jesus Christ and discover that He is the Lord, we have to prepare ourselves to undertake work in response to His calling.

Prayer: God of life, thank you for lovingly searching me out. What do you want me to do, Lord? Amen.

Recuerdo en mis años de juventud, allá en la Iglesia donde me formé, la pregunta que a menudo le hacían a cualquier persona: ¿Cuándo te convertiste? Esta pregunta equivalía a ¿Cuándo tuviste el encuentro con Jesucristo?

Tengo la impresión de que esta pregunta ya no se utiliza en la Iglesia; si acaso ¿Cuándo te hiciste miembro de la Iglesia?

Una definición de “conversión” es: “Hacer que alguien o algo se transforme en algo distinto de lo que era”. Y efectivamente un encuentro con Jesucristo significa un giro radical en la vida de una persona. La otra pregunta, referente a la fecha de membrecía, da más bien la impresión de que estamos entrando a formar parte de una asociación.

Es cierto que no todas las personas podrían decir como Pablo la fecha y el lugar donde se produjo el encuentro; porque ese encuentro habría tenido lugar en un largo caminar. Lo cierto es que cuando se produce el encuentro, independientemente de la forma en la que este encuentro tiene lugar, hay preguntas que surgen a continuación ¿Quién eres Señor? ¿Qué quieres que haga?

Cuando tenemos el encuentro con Jesucristo, y descubrimos que Él es el Señor; entonces tenemos que prepararnos para encarar una tarea en respuesta al llamado que nos ha hecho.

Oración: Dios de la vida, gracias porque en tu amor me buscaste. ¿Qué quieres que haga, Señor? Amén.
