BEYOND OUR EYES

ISAIAH 11:1-9

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;

from his roots a branch will bear fruit.

Isaiah 11:1

I was once walking in the countryside with a botanist friend. Every two steps he pointed out distinct plants, naming them and most pleased to see them. My eyes were unaccustomed to the miracle of small things; all that I saw before me was a confusion of green plants, and nothing else. Walking with him, I learned to train my eye little by little and to find the plant that he meant.

The same thing happens with God’s signs, the way he helps us to direct our lives. Only a trained eye can see them. Today, despite my errors, I am more accustomed to distinguishing the calligraphy of God in the setting before me. Just as the beauty of the orchid is distinguished by those who know the existence of orchids, God’s signs show themselves to those who seek him and can decipher them.

There’s an old refrain that says, “the foolish do not see the same tree as the wise.” It was hard for me to understand this, but I continue to learn.

A long time after having been given this prophecy by Isaiah, only a few were able to see God’s signs regarding the birth of the Messiah. Today, we too can see beyond our eyes.

Prayer: Lord help me to see your signs, and above all to follow them. Amen.

MÁS ALLÁ DE NUESTROS OJOS

ISAÍAS 11:1-9

Saldrá una vara del tronco de Isaí,

y un vástago retoñará de sus raíces

Isaías 11:1

Una vez caminaba con un amigo botánico por el campo. Cada dos pasos él me señalaba una planta distinta, nombrándolas y alegrándose de verlas. Mis ojos no estaban acostumbrados al milagro de las cosas pequeñas, todo lo que veía delante de mí era una confusión de plantas verdes, y nada más. Poco a poco andando con él aprendí a educar la vista y buscar la planta que quería.

Lo mismo pasa con las señales de Dios, y la manera en la que Él nos ayuda a dirigir nuestras vidas. Solo un ojo entrenado consigue verlas. Hoy, a pesar de que cometa errores, estoy más acostumbrada a distinguir en el escenario delante de mí la caligrafía de Dios. Así como la belleza de la orquídea se destaca para quien sabe que existen orquídeas, las señales de Dios se muestran para quienes le buscan y tienen el valor de descifrarlas.

Hay un antiguo refrán que dice “El tonto no ve el mismo árbol que el sabio ve”.  Me costó entender esto, pero sigo aprendiendo.

Mucho tiempo después de haber sido dado esta profecía por Isaías, sólo algunos fueron capaces de ver las señales de Dios acerca del nacimiento del mesías. Tengamos también hoy la capacidad de ver más allá de nuestros ojos.

Oración: Señor, ayúdame a ver tus señales y sobre todo a seguirlas. Amén.
