MERCY AND FORGIVENESS

MATTHEW 18:23-35

Shouldn’t you also have mercy on your fellow servant,

just as I had mercy on you?

Matthew 18:33 CEB

In this parable, the center of Jesus’ teaching is in the words of today’s text: “Shouldn’t you also have mercy on your fellow servant?” 

The mercy that God showers upon us is so abundant that we cannot measure it. At the same time, in comparison with God’s mercy, ours is pitiful and disgusting. Just like the servant in the parable, we receive abundant mercy, and we offer to others a scarce justice.

Our world needs the spirit of children, to whom Jesus refers time and time again. One day I was walking toward my house. Two boys under five years old were playing on the opposite side of the street. Soon one began to pedal furiously toward his house. I had arrived in the middle of the street when the other boy, who evidently had offended him, called out to him to say: “Come back. I’m sorry.” Like a lightning bolt, the first boy returned with his bicycle. 

The confession and forgiveness of a child are so different from ours. Only to the extent that we forgive as we have been forgiven will there be hope for peace for this world.

Prayer: God of mercy, forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

LA MISERICORDIA Y EL PERDÓN

MATEO 18:23-35

¿No te convenía también a ti tener misericordia de tu consiervo,

como también yo tuve misericordia de ti?

En esta parábola, el centro de la enseñanza de Jesús está en las palabras del texto de hoy: ¿No te convenía también a ti tener compasión de tu siervo…?

La misericordia que Dios derrama sobre nosotros es tan abundante que no la podemos medir.

Al mismo tiempo, en comparación con su misericordia, la nuestra es ruin y despreciable. Al igual que el siervo de la parábola, recibimos misericordia abundante, y ofrecemos a otros una justicia escasa. Nuestro mundo necesita del espíritu de los niños, a los cuales Jesús se refería una y otra vez.

Un día iba caminando hacia mi casa. Dos niños de menos de cinco años de edad estaban jugando al lado opuesto de la calle. De repente uno comenzó a pelear furiosamente hacia su casa. Ya había llegado al medio de la calle cuando el otro niño, quien evidentemente lo había ofendido, lo llamó para decirle: “Vuelve acá. Lo siento”. Como un relámpago, el primer niño volvió con su bicicleta hacia atrás.

La confesión y el perdón de un niño son tan diferentes a los nuestros.

Solamente en la medida en que perdonemos así como hemos sido perdonados, habrá esperanza de paz para este mundo.

Oración: Dios de misericordia, perdónanos nuestras deudas como también nosotros perdonamos a nuestros deudores. En el nombre de Jesús. Amén.
