REFORM NEVER ENDS

EPHESIANS 2:4-10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,

which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

The Protestant Church considers itself as the continuation of the covenant of Old and New Testament times. What does it mean when we call it “Reformed?” The reformers, men such as Luther and Calvin, insisted that the Church must return to the teachings of the New Testament, and also refused to accept the doctrines of the Church that were not Biblical. This meant that under their leadership it became the Church of the people, a brotherhood or community of believers where clergy and laity had equal rights and voice, because Christ makes no distinction.

Moreover, love and forgiveness are gifts from God, never earned by our works. The Christian faith requires an act of faith and truth in God, absolute dependence on Him in response to His love for us. The Bible is the Word of God. We are also the Church of the covenant and Christ is the head of the Church. However, we are not a new Church, we are the continuation of the Church of the New Testament. Therefore, we are part of the ongoing reform.

May we today continue the work of reformers such as Luther, Calvin, and so many men and women that have understood the danger of a stagnant church. We are the reformed church, always reforming.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to understand the importance of the reforms in our lives and in our communities. May our reforms always be caused and inspired by Your Spirit. Amen.

LA REFORMA NUNCA TERMINA

EFESIOS 2:4-10

La Iglesia protestante se considera como la continuadora del pacto de los tiempos del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento. ¿Qué queremos decir por “Reformada”? Los reformadores, hombres como Lutero y Calvino, insistieron para que la Iglesia retornara a las enseñanzas del Nuevo Testamento, y también rehusaron aceptar aquellas doctrinas de la Iglesia que no estaban de acuerdo con la Biblia. Esto significó que, bajo su orientación, llegó a ser la Iglesia del pueblo; una fraternidad o comunidad de creyentes donde ministros y laicos, ambos, tenían igual derecho y voz, porque Cristo no hace distinciones.

Además, el amor y el perdón son cosas que alcanzaremos como dádivas de Dios, nunca por nuestras obras.  La fe cristiana implica un acto de fe y verdad en Dios, absoluta dependencia de Él en  respuesta a su amor por nosotros. La Biblia es la Palabra de Dios. Somos también la Iglesia del Pacto y Cristo es la cabeza de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, no somos la Iglesia nueva, somos la continuación de la Iglesia del Nuevo Testamento. Por lo tanto, somos parte de la Reforma que nunca termina.

Seamos hoy los continuadores de la obra de reformadores como Lutero, Calvino y tantos hombres y mujeres que a través de la historia han comprendido el peligro de una iglesia enquistada. Somos iglesia reformada siempre reformándose.

Oración: Ayúdanos  Señor, a comprender la importancia de las reformas en nuestras vidas y en nuestras comunidades. Que nuestras reformas siempre estén animadas e inspiradas por tu Espíritu. Amén.
