CHANGING OUR PRIORITIES

MATTHEW 19:16-30

Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go,

sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor,

and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” (NRSV)

Priorities (fragments)

Not power, but humility.

Not ridicule, but love.

Not riches, but poverty.

Not purity, but innocence.

Not the “lesser evil,” but justice.

Not the abuse of possessions, but the use of possessions.

Not commotion, but silence.

Not fanaticism, but faith.

Not oppression, but freedom.

Not the letter, but the spirit.

Not first place, but last.

Not treatise, but poetry.

Not selfishness, but humanism.

Not a protected church, but a persecuted one.

Not my will, but the will of the Father.

Not scorn, but compassion.

When I read this text by Alfonso Carlos Comín, I remember the conversation between the rich young man and Jesus. Without a doubt, the young fellow was convinced he was doing the right thing in fulfilling the law, but the gospel of Jesus challenged him to change his priorities in a radical manner. We are not all that different from the rich young man, and Jesus continues to invite us to change our priorities so that we may know his Salvation.

Prayer: Help us, O God, help us to understand and to live by your message. Let us be brave enough to follow you without justifications. May your will be done! Amen.

No el desprecio, sino la compasión.

Cuando leía este texto de Alfonso Carlos Comín, recordaba el diálogo entre el joven rico y Jesús. Sin dudas el muchacho estaba convencido de que hacía lo correcto: cumplir la ley, pero el evangelio de Jesús lo desafía a cambiar de manera radical sus preferencias. No estamos muy lejos de hacer lo mismo que el joven rico y Jesús nos sigue invitando a cambiar nuestras preferencias para conocer su Salvación.

Oración: Ayúdanos oh Dios, a entender y vivir tu mensaje. Permite que seamos valientes para seguirte sin justificaciones. ¡Qué se haga tu voluntad! Amén.
