YOU MUST DECIDE

MARK 10: 17-31

At this, the man’s face fell. He went away sad,

because he had great wealth. (NIV)

Throughout history material wealth has been considered proof of the efficiency of the person that possesses it. In Jesus’ times, having wealth was evidence that God favored those who had it.

Jesus confronted this rich young man with commands that may have had to do with how he obtained his wealth, and gave him a challenge to part with it, a challenge he did not meet because he loved his possessions too much.

In this scripture passage we always focus on the rich young man, but we don’t note Peter’s arrogance in his dialogue with Jesus. We have left everything to follow you; in other words, we’re not like that guy, we’re better.

The end of the dialogue clarifies Jesus’ vision. If it’s bad to have riches in the first place, it’s also bad to deprecate other persons. He seems to be saying: Peter, don’t think that because you came before the young man you already have it all.

Humility, simplicity, dependence on God’s grace and good human relations should be the hallmarks of anybody who says they follow Jesus. With Jesus you always have to decide.

Prayer: Lord, we pause in our hectic life to recognize that we need a genuine encounter with You. Enable us in this encounter to discover the need to decide correctly according to Your will. Amen.

HAY QUE DECIDIR

MARCOS  10: 17-31

Pero él, afligido por esta palabra, se fue triste,

porque tenía muchas posesiones

En todos los tiempos las riquezas materiales han sido consideradas una prueba de eficiencia de la persona que las posee. En los tiempos de Jesús el tener riquezas se consideraba una prueba de que Dios favorecía a quienes las poseían.

Jesús confronta a este joven rico con mandamientos que quizás tuvieran que ver con la manera en la que adquirió sus riquezas y le pone una meta a cumplir; meta que no cumple por su amor desmedido a sus pertenencias.

Siempre focalizamos este pasaje en el joven, pero pocas veces nos damos cuenta de la arrogancia del apóstol Pedro en su diálogo con Jesús.  Nosotros le hemos dejado todo para seguirte; o sea,  nosotros no somos como ese, somos mejores.

El final del diálogo aclara la visión de Jesús. Si malo es tener las riquezas en primer lugar, también el desdén hacia otras personas es malo. Parece decir: Pedro, no creas que porque llegaste primero que el joven ya lo conseguiste todo.

La humildad, la sencillez, la dependencia de la gracia de Dios y las buenas relaciones humanas deben ser distintivos de toda persona que diga que sigue a Jesús. Con Jesús siempre hay que decidir.

Oración: Señor, hacemos un alto en nuestra vida ajetreada para reconocer que dependemos de un encuentro genuino contigo. Permite que este encuentro nos descubra la necesidad de decidir correctamente según tu voluntad. Amén.
