God Has “Come Down” to Save Us

Exodus 3: 1-10

"I am the God of your father,

the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." (NRSV)

Exodus 3:6a

Slavery has been one of the great injustices that has been perpetrated in our world. God’s people were enslaved and suffered greatly. The (burning) bush may be compared to this people and the fire with their suffering. They were a people that was suffering, but like the burning bush were not consumed.

There was the God of Moses’ ancestors urging him to go and set them free from oppression. God is not far from the suffering of his people; he was not yesterday nor is he today, but he “has come down to save us.” God is not distant or unattainable; he is amid us. The certainty of his presence frees us. When there are pain, injustice and suffering, the God of history, the God of our ancestors is there to relieve us. Our suffering can burn, but it does not consume us if we feel God’s presence.

Prayer: God of our ancestors, we thank you because with the manifestation of your Son Jesus Christ, we feel your close and freeing presence. You uphold us in our sufferings. Don’t ever leave us. Like Moses, use us to free the oppressed. Allow us to act with justice. Amen.

Dios “ha bajado” para salvarnos

Éxodo 3: 1-10

Yo soy el Dios de tus antepasados.

Éxodo 3:6a

La esclavitud ha sido una de las grandes injusticias que se ha cometido en nuestro mundo. El pueblo de Dios era esclavo y por tanto sufría. La zarza puede ser comparada con este pueblo y el fuego con el sufrimiento del mismo. Un pueblo que estaba sufriendo, pero, así como la zarza ardiente, no se consumía. Ahí estaba el Dios de los antepasados de Moisés, instándolo a ir a liberarlos de la opresión. Dios no está ajeno al sufrimiento del pueblo, no lo estuvo ayer, ni lo está hoy, sino que “ha bajado para salvarnos”. No está distante e inalcanzable, está en medio nuestro. La seguridad de su presencia nos libera.  Donde están el dolor, la injusticia y el sufrimiento está el Dios de la historia, el Dios de nuestros antepasados para aliviarnos. Nuestro sufrimiento puede arder, pero no nos consume si sentimos la presencia de Dios.

Oración: Dios de nuestros antepasados, te agradecemos porque con la manifestación de tu Hijo Jesucristo sentimos tu presencia cercana y liberadora. Tú nos sostienes en medio de nuestros sufrimientos. No nos dejes nunca. Como a Moisés, úsanos para liberar a los oprimidos. Permite que podamos actuar con justicia. Amén.
