The Son of the Living God

 Matthew 16:13-16

Throughout the history of the Church, the figure of Jesus has been the most striking: “Jesus is God but at the same time truly human.” Facing the question “Who is Jesus?” we look not only to learned formulas or the words heard from other people but rather to the depths of our heart, and there, surely, will be the most sincere and authentic answer. There’s no point in saying “they say you are . . .”; rather we must take the lead.

If we don’t believe in the human Jesus who lived among the people of his time, who felt hungry, tired, who wept, who was not exempt from human suffering, who shared with the marginalized, who broke plans and prejudices of his time – if we don’t feel him close, then the Incarnation of God will not have been real.

Today, as we celebrate Epiphany, the definitive manifestation of God in Jesus, we feel that this divine and protective presence is real, is good news to celebrate and to share. Today’s invitation is to follow the example of the one whom we claim to follow and to give that faith a name: Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for showing us through Jesus Christ who you are. Thank you for caring for humanity. Be with us today and always. Amen.

A lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia la figura de Jesús ha sido la que más ha llamado la atención: "Jesús es Dios, pero a la vez hombre verdadero".

Ante la pregunta ¿quién es Jesús?, no busquemos sólo en las fórmulas aprendidas, con palabras escuchadas de la gente, sino en el fondo de nuestro corazón. Y ahí, de seguro estará lo más sincero y auténtico. De nada sirve responder: “dicen que eres…”, sino que tenemos que tomar la iniciativa.

Si no creemos en un Jesús humano, que vivió entre la gente de su tiempo, que sentía hambre, cansancio, que lloró, que no estuvo exento del sufrimiento humano, que compartía con las personas marginadas, que rompió esquemas y prejuicios de su época. Si no lo sentimos cercano, entonces la encarnación de Dios no habría sido real.

Hoy, cuando celebramos la epifanía, la manifestación definitiva de Dios en Jesús, sentimos que esta presencia divina y protectora es real, es buena noticia para celebrar y compartir. La invitación para hoy es que podamos seguir el ejemplo de quien nos decimos ser seguidores y seguidoras y da nombre a nuestra fe: a Jesucristo.

Oración: Gracias Dios, por revelarnos a través de Jesucristo quién eres. Gracias por compadecerte de la humanidad. Acompáñanos hoy y siempre. Amén.
