New Year
COUNT ON ME, LORD!
Nehemiah 1

Then I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor with you,
I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my ancestors' graves, so that I may rebuild it.  (NRSV)
Nehemiah 2:5

This text shows us the qualities that we as Christians should have.

Who was Nehemiah? He was born when the people of Israel were in exile in Babylon; he had not grown up in his homeland, and he occupied an important position in the house of the king as cupbearer. He was important and lived a privileged life. However, the attitude he assumed when he realized the terrible conditions in which his people lived is admirable: he felt committed. He showed his unconditional willingness to serve his God and his people. When he learned that the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem following the Exile suffered misery and humiliation, and that the city had been destroyed, he wept, fasted and prayed. Weeping and fasting were a sign of pain. Not indifferent to the pain of others, he was moved by the suffering of his countrymen. What sensitivity and sincere love for others!

And he prayed. He prayed for many days. The first action of this troubled man was to pray. He knew that prayer was the means of finding solutions and the power to carry them out. He was sure that God would watch over his people and give him an answer. After a time in prayer, he knew what to do. Nehemiah didn’t merely weep, fast, and pray, he also sprang into action. He went where God needed him to restore the walls of Jerusalem and the spiritual life of Israel.

In light of these actions, we should ask ourselves: Do we really feel the pain of our neighbor? Are we really interested in mending the wrongs in our community? Do we pray with devotion, faith, and the necessary persistence? Are we ready to participate fully in service?

Let’s look within and review to what extent our actions are consistent with our faith and not just those of Sunday churchgoers. Let’s learn from Nehemiah.

Prayer: Lord, at the start of a new year we ask you to secure our faith with constant and sincere prayer. Don’t let us pass indifferently by the individual and social needs of our community. Guide us to be an active part of your solution. Amen.
