How Great Thou Art
Psalm 8
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens. (NRSV)
Psalm 8:1
Every morning I
try to visit the place where I know that the sun rises, and I enjoy the
different colors and forms that the clouds take on receiving the first rays of
the day. Then Psalm 8 comes to my mind. A sunset, a star-studded sky, the
combined sight of sea, rivers, and hills makes us think: How beautiful and
perfect Creation is, what an orderly and wonderful environment God has given
us! How great God is, and how small we are!
What is
spectacular and great always impresses us, but we don’t always feel the same
emotion about the small and day-to-day things. We are so concentrated on our
occupations and concerns that life becomes difficult and routine, and we don’t
see the miracles that day by day seem insignificant to us.
For example, we
don’t cherish the birth of a child, the sight of a plant sprouting or a flower
opening, how our little daughter or granddaughter has become a professional, to
have created a family, to have friends, to wake up another day, to breathe. All
of this was created for us. We fixate on what appears negative to us and close our
eyes to that which gives us life.
Let’s learn to
appreciate all the beauty and goodness that we receive from the Lord. Let’s
learn to say with the Psalmist: Lord, how great and glorious you are!
Prayer. Beloved God, I want to praise and appreciate the gift of
life and of creation. Forgive me when I forget to do that; give me the wisdom
to appreciate and care for such a valuable gift with total humility. Amen.

¡Cuán grande eres tú!
Salmo 8
¡Oh, Jehová, Señor nuestro,
cuán grande es tu nombre
en toda la tierra!
Salmo 8:1
Cada mañana trato de ver
el lugar por donde sé que sale el sol, y disfruto de los diferentes colores y
formas que van tomando las nubes al recibir los primeros rayos del día.
Entonces viene a mi mente el salmo 8.
Una puesta de sol, un cielo estrellado, la vista combinada de mar, ríos
y lomas nos hacen pensar: ¡qué hermosa y perfecta es la Creación, qué entorno
tan ordenado y maravilloso nos ha regalado Dios! ¡qué grande es Dios y qué
pequeño somos nosotros!
Lo espectacular y
grandioso siempre nos impresiona; pero no siempre sentimos la misma emoción en
las cosas pequeñas y cotidianas. Estamos tan concentrados en nuestras
ocupaciones y preocupaciones, que la vida se vuelve difícil y rutinaria, y no
vemos los milagros, que, por cotidianos, nos parecen insignificantes.
No valoramos ni agradecemos,
por ejemplo, el milagro del nacimiento de un niño, de ver retoñar una planta, o
abrir una flor, de cómo nuestra pequeñita hija o nieta se ha convertido en una
profesional, el haber creado una familia, de tener amigos, de despertar otro día
más, de respirar. Todo ello fue creado para nosotros. Nos fijamos en lo que nos
parece negativo y cerramos los ojos a todo lo que nos da vida. Aprendamos a apreciar todo lo hermoso y bueno
que recibimos del Señor. Digamos como el salmista: ¡Cuán grande y glorioso
eres, Señor!
Oración. Amado Dios, quiero alabarte y agradecerte el regalo
de la vida y la creación. Perdóname cuando olvido hacerlo, dame la sabiduría
para apreciar y cuidar con toda humildad tan valioso presente. Amén
