THE THINGS WHICH UNITE US

LUKE 15:11-32

Then the older son was furious and

didn’t want to enter in, but his father came out and begged him.

How many are the reasons for envy and jealousy, for living with rancor and bitterness?  This is what separates the older brother from the younger brother.  How many things separate us today?  Surely, we could say old offenses, antipathy, prejudice, jealousy and envy.  The list is long, almost unending.  The older brother had plenty of reasons to feel displaced and to be furious.  How many times do we also have reasons to feel the same?

Nevertheless, the father begs the older son to come in.  It hurts him to see the resentment that keeps his older son from being able to enjoy the party, for he loves both sons equally.

What pain will our Father feel over all that separates us and keeps us from celebrating?

“My things are your things.”  This unites the older brother with the younger brother: the same house, the same blood, the same last name, the same love. 

What unites us today?  The same house that was given by God is the world, the same love poured out for us all, the same body given for all, the same love and mercy of the Father, the same last name:  Christian.

Each time we join together in his name, each time we celebrate the Lord’s supper, the hope is again present that we are called to be one body through the one who was given for us and makes us heirs of the same promise.

Prayer:  Forgive us, Lord, for the many, many times that we allow hate, envy and offenses to interfere in our life as brothers and sisters in the communities of faith.  Guide us and free us from sin.  Amen.

¡Cuántos motivos para la envidia y los celos, para vivir con rencores y amargados! Esto separaba al hermano mayor del menor. ¿Cuántas cosas nos separan a nosotros hoy? Seguro que podremos decir que nos separan viejas ofensas, antipatías, prejuicios, celos, envidia. La lista es larga, casi interminable. El hermano mayor tenía motivos de sobra para sentirse desplazado y estar furioso. ¡Cuántas veces también nosotros tenemos motivos para sentirnos así!

Sin embargo, el padre ruega al mayor que entre. Le duele ver ese resentimiento que le impide a su hijo mayor sumarse a la fiesta, pues él ama por igual a sus dos hijos.

¿Cuánto dolor sentirá nuestro Padre por todo aquello que hoy nos separa y nos impide festejar?

Mis cosas son tus cosas. Esto unía al mayor con el menor: la misma casa, la misma sangre, el mismo apellido, el mismo amor. ¿Qué nos une hoy? La misma casa que nos fue dada por Dios que es el mundo, una misma sangre derramada para todos, el mismo cuerpo entregado para todos, el mismo amor y la misericordia del Padre, un mismo apellido: cristiano y cristiana.

Cada vez que nos juntamos en su nombre, cada vez que celebramos la cena de nuestro Señor, se vuelve a hacer presente la esperanza de que somos convocados como un cuerpo por aquel que se entregó por nosotros y nos hace herederos de una misma promesa.

Oración: Perdónanos Señor, por las tantas y tantas veces en las que dejamos que odios, envidias, y ofensas interfieran en nuestra vida como hermanos y hermanas de comunidades de fe. Guíanos, apártanos del mal. Amén.
