THE TRUE AUTHORITY

MarK 1:21-28

The people were amazed at his teaching, because he

taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

Many people in positions of power seek to win the respect of persons below them and use all kinds of tricks to exercise their leadership with authority: manipulation, threats, deceit, doubletalk, punishment, and many other inconsistent practices.

Jesus’ authority, however, was not forced or won on the basis of despotism and fear. The text says the listeners recognized his authority when they heard his words. Jesus’ authority comes from on high, is granted by God, and reflected in authentic testimony, in which there is “no gap between words and actions.”

Today, we are the ones who must inspire that respect with our testimony. May our words not be empty and cold. May we not seek to curry favor with those in positions of power to “treat us right.”  May those who hear us and see us also say: These people speak and act as persons with authority!

Prayer: Thank you, God, because we can recognize true authority in Jesus. Help us to be transparent and genuine, so we can win the respect and confidence of others. Amen

LA VERDADERA AUTORIDAD

Marcos 1:21-28

Y se admiraban de su doctrina, porque les enseñaba

como quien tiene autoridad, y no como los escribas

Muchas personas que ocupan puestos de poder desean ganarse el respeto de quienes están bajo sus designios y utilizan todo tipo de artimañas para ejercer su liderazgo con autoridad: desde la manipulación, la amenaza, el engaño, el doble discurso, el castigo y muchas otras prácticas incoherentes.

La autoridad de Jesús, sin embargo, no es forzada ni ganada sobre la base del despotismo y el miedo. El texto dice que sus oyentes reconocieron su autoridad al escuchar sus palabras. La autoridad de Jesús viene de lo alto, es concedida por Dios y se concreta en un testimonio auténtico, en el que “no hay trecho del dicho al hecho”.

Hoy, somos nosotros quienes debemos inspirar ese respeto con nuestro testimonio. Ojalá nuestros discursos no sean vacíos y fríos. Ojalá no queramos ganarnos el favor de quienes están en posiciones de poder para que “nos vaya bien” ¡Qué la gente al escucharnos y vernos pueda decir también: Esta gente habla y actúa como quien tiene autoridad!

Oración: Gracias Dios, porque podemos reconocer en Jesús la verdadera autoridad. Ayúdanos a ser transparentes y auténticos, de tal manera que ganemos el respeto y la confianza de las personas. Amén
