JESUS, THE MORNING STAR

REVELATION 22:6-16

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel

to give you this testimony to the churches.

I am the root and the offspring of David,

and the bright morning star.”   (NIV)

Revelation 22:16

At some time, we’ve heard this phrase: “Opportunity knocks only once at our door.” This is the way the human being has of remembering the importance of each moment of his life. But in reality, this is a partial truth.

God could well be considered the God of the second opportunity. His patience and longanimity are two of his most glorious attributes. Some years ago, I read a book by Virgil Gheorghiu that has the same title: The Second Opportunity. The impression this novel made on me was unforgettable.  For the author there is no second opportunity, although his book is titled that way. And in the end, everything is tragedy, desolation and death.

Jesus is the second great opportunity for mankind. In the Old Testament he is identified as the “shoot of Jesse.” (Isaiah 11: 1) Many times a cut trunk will grow small shoots that try to form a new trunk from the same tree. Thus, in biblical thinking, Jesus Christ is the renewed, or shoot of Jesse who comes to take the place of the declining family of David.

The biblical passage shows us a Christ at the door, a resplendent star in the morning, a second opportunity for those, lost in the night, who have given up hope of any possibility of salvation… “the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (Acts 4: 11) No one can intelligently overlook a present opportunity while waiting for another day, another opportunity. But nevertheless, in Christ there is always a new opportunity. Each night is followed by the opportunity to get up and fight to the end. Let us remember the words of the prophesy of this book.

Prayer:  We seek today, beloved God, that we may each day live up to the stature of your Son. Amen.

APOCALIPSIS 22:6-16

Yo Jesús he enviado mi ángel para daros testimonio de estas cosas

 en las iglesias: yo soy la raíz y el linaje de David,

la estrella resplandeciente de la mañana

Alguna vez hemos escuchado esta frase: “La oportunidad llama a nuestra puerta una sola vez”. Esta es la forma que tiene el ser humano de recordar la importancia de cada momento de su vida. Pero en realidad esta es una verdad parcial.

Dios bien puede ser considerado el Dios de la segunda oportunidad. Su paciencia y longanimidad son dos de sus atributos más gloriosos. Hace algunos años leí un libro de Virgil Gheorghiu, que lleva este mismo título: “La segunda oportunidad”. No he podido olvidar la impresión que causó en mí esta novela. Para el autor no hay segunda oportunidad, aunque así se llame su libro; y al final todo es tragedia, desolación y muerte.

Jesús es la gran segunda oportunidad del ser humano. En el Antiguo Testamento se le identifica como la vara de Isaí. En muchas oportunidades al tronco cortado se le ven renuevos que persistentemente tratan de formar un nuevo tronco del mismo árbol. Así en el pensamiento bíblico, Jesucristo es el renuevo o vara de Isaí que viene a tomar el lugar de la gloria de la declinante familia de David. El pasaje bíblico nos muestra un Cristo a la puerta, una estrella resplandeciente en la mañana, una segunda oportunidad para quien, perdido en la noche, no pensó en posibilidad alguna de salvación. …la piedra reprobada de los edificadores que ha venido a ser la cabeza del ángulo. Nadie puede inteligentemente pasar por alto una oportunidad presente mientras espera otro día, otra oportunidad. Pero sin embargo en Cristo siempre hay una nueva oportunidad.  A cada noche sigue la oportunidad de levantarse y luchar hasta el fin. Guardemos las palabras de la profecía de este libro.

Oración: Buscamos hoy Dios amado, que permitas que cada día podamos vivir más a la altura de tu Hijo. Amén.
