LET US BE A CHURCH IN THE WORLD

JOHN 3:16-21

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world,

but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:17 (NRSV)

Many Christian denominations try to separate the Church from the world in their preaching as if they were different spaces and as if there were an abyss between them.

God’s plans for the history of humanity have nothing to do with this separation. God has always been in the life of God’s people, not as a distant being, but as one more traveler, listening, crying, rejoicing, lighting the world with the flame of hope, enveloping everything with God’s justice and peace.

God became incarnate in the world and did it in the most and challenging way: in the form of a little baby who later called God Father, or Daddy. God is born in a dark place in the midst of the anguish and the joy of an ordinary family. God inhabited all the stages of human life in Jesus of Nazareth.

Today, as we begin Advent, we must recognize that we are a Church so far as we make incarnate the work of the kingdom proclaimed by Jesus in the world. God didn’t come to condemn the world, so let us surrender ourselves to the hope of the newness that God is creating and remaking in the world, taking part in the great harvest of kingdom values that Jesus taught us.

Prayer: Eternal and incarnate God, thank you that you are never distant from our story, from our world, for you always reveal yourself to be close, human, and divine. Help us to be a Church and to surrender ourselves to this active hope of your reign which comes with the face and the smile of a child. Amen.

SEAMOS IGLESIA EN EL MUNDO

JUAN 3:16-21

Porque no envió Dios a su hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por él.

Muchas denominaciones cristianas en su prédica intentan separar la Iglesia del mundo, como si se tratara de espacios diferentes y como si hubiera un abismo entre ellos.

Los planes de Dios para la historia de la humanidad, nada tienen que ver con esta separación. Dios siempre estuvo en la vida de su pueblo, no como un ser distante, sino como un caminante más, escuchando, llorando, alegrándose, encendiendo el mundo con la llama de la esperanza, envolviéndolo todo con su justicia y su paz.

Dios se encarnó en el mundo y lo hizo de la manera más inesperada y retadora: en un pequeño bebé, que luego lo llama Abba, es decir papito, Dios nace en un lugar sombrío, en medio de la angustia y la alegría de una familia común. Dios habitó todas las etapas de la vida humana en Jesús de Nazaret.

Hoy, cuando comenzamos el adviento, debemos reconocer que somos iglesia en tanto encarnamos el proyecto del reino, proclamado por Jesús, en el mundo. Dios no vino para condenar al mundo, entreguémonos pues a esa espera de lo nuevo que Dios está creando y rehaciendo en el mundo, participando de esa gran cosecha de valores del reino que Jesús nos enseñó.

Oración: Dios eterno y encarnado, gracias porque nunca estás distante de nuestra historia, de nuestro mundo, porque siempre te revelas cercano, humano y divino. Ayúdanos a ser iglesia y a entregarnos a esta espera activa de tu reino que viene con rostro y sonrisa de niño. Amén.
