THE END OF A DRAMA

LUKE 24:50-53

Therefore, let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ

and be taken forward to maturity…(NIV)

After forty days of the appearance of the Risen One had passed, a final moment was necessary in which Jesus came to his glory. Jesus had come to the world at a set hour, and it was necessary that he also depart the world at a set hour.

The term “heaven” used in the text has to be understood not as a “place,” rather as a “state” in which we will always walk without separating ourselves from God. At the end Luke tells us that the disciples returned to Jerusalem very content; that is, that despite the Ascension, or perhaps because of it, the disciples were sure that Jesus hadn’t abandoned them, rather that he was with them forever. The Ascension is the glorious finale to the earthly drama of the One who, being divine in nature, did not insist on being equal to God, and was born as a man.

The life of any human being is a progressive process, like the seed that grows until becoming a luxuriant tree. So too must be our path to personal perfection. The Ascension of Jesus reveals to us that fulfillment is only attained at the end, and that furthermore, it is a gift from God.

Prayer: Eternal and ever-present God, I pray that day by day you perfect my life so that in the end I might obtain the fullness I desire. Amen.

EL FIN DE UN DRAMA

LUCAS 24:50-53

Sigamos aprendiendo más y más, hasta que lleguemos a ser cristianos maduros.

Hebreos 6:1a

            Después de transcurrir cuarenta días de apariciones del Resucitado, era necesario que hubiera un momento final en el que Jesús volviera a su gloria. Jesús había llegado al mundo en una hora fija y era necesario que dejara el mundo también en una hora fija.

            El término cielo empleado en el texto hay que entenderlo no como un “lugar”, sino como un “estado”, en el que andaremos por siempre sin separarnos de Dios. Lucas nos dice al final que los discípulos volvieron a Jerusalén muy contentos;  o sea, que a pesar de la ascensión, o quizá debido a ella, los discípulos estaban seguros de que Jesús no les abandonaba, sino que estaba con ellos para siempre. La Ascensión es el final glorioso del drama terrenal de Aquel que siendo de naturaleza divina, no insistió en ser igual a Dios, y nació como hombre.

            La vida de cualquier ser humano es un proceso progresivo. Como la semilla que crece hasta convertirse en un árbol frondoso, así también ha de transcurrir nuestro camino hacia la perfección personal. La Ascensión de Jesús nos revela que la plenitud se alcanza solamente al final y que, además, es un don de Dios.

Oración: Dios eterno y siempre presente, te ruego que perfecciones día a día mi vida, para que al final pueda obtener la plenitud que anhelo. Amén.
