SITTING ON A DONKEY

Matthew 21:1-9

Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey

Matthew 21:5 (NRSV)

            In Christ’s ministry, there are symbols that sometimes go unnoticed. His entry into Jerusalem on a donkey is one of those. In ancient times, when a king would visit another in a warlike challenge, he would take care to travel on a beautiful steed or in a chariot pulled by spirited horses. When Jesus came in peace, he rode a donkey, considered a symbol of peace and humility and even of submission. The donkey, in pejorative terms, was considered a symbol of stubbornness or lack of knowledge; the donkey also represents self-denial and boundless love of work and sacrifice.

            Jerusalem did not discover this message. The newcomer came in the name of the Lord, as a peacemaker, the greatest exponent of reconciliation; capable of submitting to death to save the human race.

            Jesus didn’t come into the world to conquer it or to submit to it, but to save it and to offer it a new opportunity, a newlife.

            Those who went before and we who follow behind are called to raise our hands to receive Him who said: ...my peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you.

Prayer: Lord God, we pray that we will be humble in life, with the ability to give ourselves sacrificially on behalf of others.

SENTADO SOBRE UN ASNO

Mateo 21:1-9

He aquí, viene a ti manso sentado sobre un asno

Mateo 21:5

              En el ministerio de Cristo hay simbolismos que a veces pasan inadvertidos. Su entrada a Jerusalén en un asno es uno de ellos. En la antigüedad, cuando un rey visitaba a otro en desafío guerrero, se preocupaba por viajar en un hermoso corcel o en un carro tirado por briosos caballos. Cuando venía en son de paz, cabalgaba sobre un burro, considerado símbolo de paz y humildad y hasta de sumisión. Considerado símbolo de terquedad  o falta de conocimiento, en términos peyorativos; el asno significa también abnegación y amor ilimitado al trabajo y el sacrificio.

              Jerusalén no descubrió este mensaje. El recién llegado venía en el nombre del Señor, como hacedor de la paz, máximo exponente  de la reconciliación; capaz de someterse a la muerte para salvar al género humano.

Jesús no vino al mundo para conquistarlo o someterlo, sino para salvarlo y ofrecerle una nueva oportunidad, una vida a plenitud.

Los que fueron delante y los que vamos detrás estamos llamados a levantar palmas para recibir a Aquel que dijo: …mi paz os dejo, mi paz os doy, no como el mundo la da yo os la doy

Oración: Dios y Señor, oramos para que seamos humildes en la vida, con la capacidad de entregarnos sacrificialmente a favor de los demás. Amén.
