COUNT ON ME, LORD!

Nehemiah 2:1-6

…and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city of Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”  (NIV)

Nehemiah 2:5

This text reveals the qualities we should have as Christians. Nehemiah was born in Babylon, in  exile, not his native land. But he held an important position in the house of the Persian king; he was his cup bearer.

He was important and had a privileged life. However, the attitude he assumes on knowing the terrible condition in which his people lived is admirable. He felt committed. He showed his unconditional disposition to serve his God and his brothers. He’s not indifferent to others pain, rather he is moved by the suffering of his compatriots.

The first action attributed to this man was to pray. He knew that prayer was the way of finding solutions and the strength to bring them about. Nehemiah didn’t limit himself to crying, fasting or praying, he went directly into action.

In view of these actions, we should ask ourselves, “Do we really feel the pain of our neighbor? Do we truly interest ourselves in correcting the illnesses in our community? Do we pray with the necessary devotion, faith and persistence? Are we willing to fully participate in serving?” Let’s look inside and check to what extent we are consistent with our faith and not just Sunday believers at church. Let’s learn from Nehemiah.

Prayer: Lord, at beginning a new year we ask that you help us secure our faith in constant and sincere prayer. Do not let us be indifferent to the individual and social necessities our communities suffer. Guide us to be an active part of your solution. Amen.
