 JUDAS’ SIN

Acts 1:15-20

            Judas Iscariot is one of the few souls whom the Scriptures identify as having lost his saintliness. (Acts 1:25, Mathew 26: 24). After betraying Jesus, Judas lost all hope of receiving pardon, and incredulous, he hangs himself.   

            But perhaps for a time, yes, he was a saint. Perhaps during the three years he accompanied Jesus he truly believed in him. What a tragedy, that after having shared the ministry of the Gospel he then rejected it!

            The only thing that makes us “saints” is faith in Christ. It’s a precious gift from God that one can loose. To despise the Word of God and the sacraments can cause faith to weaken, to extinguish, to die.

            But what great consolation it is to know that the means of God’s grace: the Gospels, baptism and holy communion are used by the Holy Spirit to  create and sustain redemptive faith!

            Whatever our sin may be, even as perverse as Judas’, is forgiven when God offers us the word of absolution. Whatever our guilt may be, we can hold onto our baptism, trust in his Word, and receive communion instead of despairing. God confirms our saintliness time and time again by means of grace.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to maintain faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.

EL PECADO DE JUDAS

Hechos 1:15-20

Judas era uno de los nuestros, y tenía parte en nuestro trabajo

Hechos 1:17

            Judas Iscariote es una de las pocas almas a quien la Escritura identifica como alguien que perdió su santidad. (Hechos 1:25, Mateo 26:24). Después de traicionar a Jesús, Judas perdió toda esperanza de recibir perdón, y en su incredulidad se ahorcó.

            Pero quizás por un tiempo Judas sí fue un santo. Quizás durante los tres años que lo acompañó creyó verdaderamente en Jesús. ¡Qué tragedia que después de haber compartido el ministerio del Evangelio, lo rechazó!

            Lo único que nos hace “santos” es la fe en Cristo. Es un regalo precioso de Dios que se puede perder. Menospreciar la Palabra de Dios y los Sacramentos puede hacer que la fe se debilite, se apague y se muera.

            Pero ¡qué consuelo tan grande es saber que los medios de gracia de Dios, el Evangelio, el Bautismo, la Santa Comunión, son usados por el Espíritu Santo para crear y sostener la fe salvadora!

            Cualquiera que sea nuestro pecado, aun tan  perverso como el de Judas, es perdonado cuando Dios nos ofrece la Palabra de absolución. Cualquiera que sea nuestra culpa, podemos aferrarnos a nuestro Bautismo, confiar en Su Palabra y recibir Su Santa Cena en vez de desesperarnos. Dios confirma nuestra santidad una y otra vez a través de los medios de gracia.

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a mantener la fe en Cristo Jesús. Amén.
