I HAVE MORE AT HOME

Luke 21: 1-4

for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.

            The title is part of a poem by José Martí that is well known by all Cubans. You don’t have to remember much of what the text is about: two mothers and two daughters in very different socioeconomic situations. One daughter has shoes, the other barefoot, one rich and healthy and the other poor and sickly, one daughter who gives and the other receives. But . . . Why does Pilar disobey the order to care for her shoes? Who asked Pilar to give them away? It is certain that she had many others, but these were very special to her mother. In a sense, Luke’s text can speak to these questions.

            The spirit that moved the poor widow was the same spirit of mercy that moved Pilar, even though she was a rich girl, she was the same person who mobilized thousands of Cubans under the ravages of hurricanes to dispense food, articles of clothing, shoes, and every type of indispensible resource. It was the same spirit that made children toss their toys into coffers of solidarity and the same spirit that moved others to sweat as bricklayers, to weep with those who wept, and to pray, simply placing in the coffers a smile of encouragement, faith, hope and love.

 

Prayer: Lord, whether we are rich or poor, we ask that you place mercy and love in our hearts, so that when you place coffers in our path, we may always be ready to fill them with the most precious things we have. Amen.

YO TENGO MAS EN MI CASA

Lucas 21: 1-4

Porque todos aquellos echaron para las ofrendas de Dios de lo que les sobraba; más esta, de su pobreza echó todo lo que tenía.

            El título es parte de un poema de José Martí muy conocido de todos los cubanos, no hay que recordar mucho de qué trata el texto; dos madres y dos niñas colocadas en situaciones socioeconómicas muy diferentes; una niña con zapatos y la otra descalza, una rica y saludable y la otra pobre y enferma, una niña que da y la otra que recibe. Pero… ¿y por qué Pilar desobedece la orden de cuidar sus zapatos?, ¿quién le pidió a Pilar que los regalara? Es cierto que la niña tenía otros, pero, estos eran muy especiales para su madre. El texto de Lucas pudiera de alguna manera responder esas preguntas.

            El espíritu que movió a la viuda pobre, fue el mismo espíritu de misericordia que movió a Pilar, a pesar de que era una niña rica, y fue el mismo que moviliza bajo los estragos de huracanes a miles de cubanos a desprenderse de alimentos, prendas de ropa, zapatos, y todo tipo de recursos indispensables. Fue el mismo espíritu que hizo que los niños, echaran en las arcas de la solidaridad sus valiosos juguetes; y fue el mismo que movió a otros a depositar su sudor como albañiles, a llorar con los que lloraban, y a orar, colocando simplemente en las arcas una sonrisa de aliento, de fe, de esperanza y de amor.

 

Oración: Señor, te pedimos que tanto si somos ricos o pobres, pongas misericordia y amor en nuestro corazón, para cuando tú coloques arcas en nuestro camino, estar siempre dispuestas a llenarlas con lo más preciado que tengamos. Amén.
