CALLED BY JESUS

Matthew 4:18-25

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”

            Jesus had initiated his Reign and called these fisherfolk to be converted and to teach other people about God’s Reign. Not doubting, they quickly followed him; they were convinced that, following him, their lives would change forever.

            Jesus expressed his call in terms that they could understand perfectly; they were professional fishers and therefore well understood the process of catching fish. They know the best time of day, the most favorable weather, the art of lowering and raising the net, how to classify the fish to keep or discard. Moreover, to be a good fisher they needed certain gifts: patience, perseverance, and tact.

            If the Church is the continuation of Jesus Christ incarnate, it must not discard what He taught at the beginning. He was concerned with anything that enslaved humanity with all its material and spiritual consequences. He wants to rescue us from all affliction, anxiety, oppression and illness. And today this is still the task of the Church; Jesus is calling us to be fishers. Let’s be sensitive to this call, serving him with humility, love, and faith, willing to learn and to be obedient spontaneously and immediately.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to hear your voice in the midst of the multitude so that we can follow you. Amen.

LLAMADOS POR JESUS

Mateo 4:18-25

Y les dijo: “Venid en pos de mí, y os haré pescadores de hombres”

Mateo 4:19

            Jesús había iniciado su Reino y llama a estos pescadores a convertirse y a enseñar a las personas sobre el Reino de Dios. Ellos no dudaron, rápidamente lo siguieron, estaban convencidos que, siguiéndole, sus vidas cambiarían para siempre.

            Jesús expresa su llamado en términos que ellos pueden entender perfectamente; eran pescadores profesionales, por lo tanto, entendían bien el proceso de atrapar peces: la mejor hora del día, el tiempo más favorable, el arte de bajar y levantar la red, cómo clasificar los peces que servían y los que no; además para ser un buen pescador se debe tener ciertos dones: paciencia, perseverancia y tacto.

            Si la iglesia es la continuación del Jesucristo encarnado no debe descuidar lo que en un principio Él enseñó. Él se preocupó por todo aquello que tiene esclavizada a la humanidad, con todas sus consecuencias espirituales y materiales. Quiere rescatarnos de toda aflicción, angustia, opresión, y enfermedad. Y esto todavía hoy sigue siendo tarea de la iglesia, Jesús nos está llamando a ser pescadores, seamos sensibles a ese llamado, sirvámosle con humildad, amor, confianza; disposición para aprender y obediencia espontánea e inmediata.

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a escuchar tu voz en medio de la multitud, para poder seguirte. Amén.
