EYES OF FAITH

2 Kings 6:14-17

He replied, “Do not be afraid, for there are more with us than there are with them”.

            In the time of Columbus, some scholars believed that the world was round, but that the distance was too great to reach the East by traveling west. Among the people, the idea persisted that the earth was flat and that, if they sailed too far, they would fall into the abyss; and if the winds pushed the sails, it would carry them west. So how would they return afterward?

            In his writings, Columbus reiterated his belief that God had sent him, and this was his reason for remaining confident. On October 2, 1492, he noted in his diary  that the sailors had recovered some of their spirits because they were seeing seaweed and white birds. Later the malaise returned and there was talk of a mutiny to force a return to Spain. Again and again, Columbus managed to convince them to wait a little longer

            God always helps our faith’s vision so that we do lose heart when the cogency  of our lives seems unattainable, and pessimism preys on us until we  become victims of impotence

 

Prayer: Thank you Lord, because your presence in our lives is made visible in the most diverse ways. Amen.

OJOS DE FE

Él le dijo: No tengas miedo, porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.

            En la época de Colón, algunos eruditos creían que la tierra era redonda, pero que la distancia era excesiva para llegar al Oriente viajando hacia el occidente. Entre el pueblo persistía la idea de que la tierra era plana y que, navegado demasiado lejos, se caería al abismo; y  si el viento impulsaba sus velas, los llevaría al oeste. Entonces, ¿Cómo regresarían después?

            En sus escritos, Colón reiteraba su fe en que Dios le había enviado, y ésta era su razón para permanecer confiado. El 2 de octubre de 1492, anotó en su diario, que los marineros recobraron algo de ánimo al observar algas marinas y aves blancas. Después volvió el malestar, y se murmuraba de un motín para forzar el regreso a España. Una y otra vez Colón logró convencerles a que aguardasen un poco más.

            Dios siempre ayuda la visión de nuestra fe para que no desmayemos cuando las evidencias de nuestras vidas parecen inasequibles, y el pesimismo hace presa de nosotros para que caigamos víctimas de la impotencia.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor, porque en nuestra vida, tu presencia se hace visible de las más diversas maneras. Amén
