I TRUST IN GOD

Luke 8:49-56

I trust in God whose word I praise – in God I trust and have not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? (NIV)

Psalm 56:4

The Psalm describes someone who finds himself persecuted and oppressed. He is someone in anguish, cornered in life by powerful enemies. It is someone, in short, who could have been David while he is pursued by Saul, who tried to kill him.

David’s life is recorded in history and the Bible, because he had been chosen by God to be King of Israel. The situations in his life led him to learn from where he could always draw new strength: from trust in God. And that’s what the Psalm talks about: a relationship with God as one who is nourished by roots from the depths of the earth. Only with deep or extensive roots can a plant survive when beset by drought or in a hostile or desert environment. Confidence! Have more faith! That’s what we prescribe to people who are in low spirits or going through a crisis in their life. But here it is not about a general recommendation; it describes the deep and lasting relationship between the person and his God. It is a relationship that, like the breath of the wind, penetrates every corner of life, bringing the vitality that only the sap of God can give. And that relationship, to which we are invited, has consequences: I praise, sing, pray and meditate on the Word of God, I have no fear or fears because I know I am protected from all danger and threat, from all anguish and pain. No human being has the power to harm the person who trusts in that God of love.

Prayer: Help me put my trust in you, Lord, even in my worst circumstances. Amen.

CONFIO EN DIOS

Lucas 8:49-56
