NONSENSICAL PRAYERS?

MARK 10:13-16

Jesus said: Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.

Matthew 19:14 (NRSV)

Last week I took my son out to eat at a restaurant. My little boy asked if he could bless the table before eating what was brought to us. I asked him to do so, and this was his prayer: “Dear Lord, I give thanks to you for the food that we are about to eat, and I would thank you even more if Mama gives us ice cream for dessert. Amen.”

Along with some laughter coming from the tables next to me, I heard a woman say, “Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Look at asking God for ice cream! What nonsense!”

Naturally I bought ice cream for dessert. Then, after finishing his ice cream, my son put some of his ice cream onto one of the plates on the table. Without saying a word, he walked through the restaurant and stopped in front of the woman who had expressed that it was nonsense to pray for ice cream. With a great big smile, he told her, “This is for you. Sometimes, ice cream is also good for the soul, and mine has had enough.”

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the innocence of children, enable us to listen to you and to hope in you. Amen.

¿ORACIONES SIN SENTIDO?

Marcos 10:13-16

Jesús dijo: Dejad a los niños venir a mí y no se lo impidáis, porque de los tales es el reino de los cielos.

Mateo 19:14

La semana pasada llevé a mi hijo a comer a un restaurante. Mi pequeño hijo me preguntó si podía bendecir la mesa antes de comer lo que nos habían traído. Le pedí que lo hiciera y esta fue su oración: “Señor, te doy gracias por los alimentos que vamos a comer y te agradecería aún más si mamá nos da helado como postre. Amén.”

Junto con algunas risas que provenían de las mesas de al lado, escuché a una mujer decir: “Los niños de hoy ni siquiera saben cómo orar. ¡Mira que preguntarle a Dios por un helado! ¡Qué tontería!”

Naturalmente compré helados para el postre. Luego de terminar su helado, mi hijo sirvió un poco de helado en uno de los platos que había sobre la mesa y sin pronunciar ni una sola palabra caminó por el restaurante y se paró frente a la señora que expresó que era una tontería eso de orar por helado. Con una gran sonrisa le dijo: “Esto es para usted. A veces, el helado es bueno también para las almas y la mía ya tuvo suficiente.”

 

Oración: Señor, gracias por la inocencia de los niños, capacítanos para escucharte y esperar en Ti. Amén.
