LIKE THE FIRE

Luke  9:10-17

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Acts  2:3 (NIV)

This text speaks to us of a symbol, fire. It is about that day when the disciples of Jesus were in Jerusalem, at the feast of thanksgiving for the harvest. Seven weeks had passed since their Lord had been condemned and crucified. They were still in doubt about their mission; and it is in the midst of the crowd that this phenomenon occurs. The image of the tongues of fire that distinguished the followers of Jesus has been the subject of countless paintings. Sometimes they have even been identified as the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the fire as a symbol of that which illuminates and purifies and is a sign of the divine presence and call. That extraordinary event caused the crowd to reflect attentively and humbly on the words of the apostles. And it is in that word proclaimed with power where the Holy Spirit is poured out.

Today we live in a world of images such as seen on TV, cinema, and the Internet. But it is remarkable how already in ancient times images and words, as well as sensations, were combined to clearly understand the message: Jesus is the Savior. There is no doubt that just as that crowd began to gather when it recognized Jesus in the words of the apostles, so today the churches and all humanity are called to proclaim faith and unity in God with words and deeds. Only in this way will they be faithful to Jesus Christ.

 

Prayer: My good God, we ask today that your love never cease and  that your presence always be in our midst. Amen.

COMO EL FUEGO

Lucas 9:10-17

Y se les aparecieron lenguas como de fuego, repartidas sobre cada uno de ellos.

Hechos 2:3

Este texto nos habla de un símbolo, el fuego. Se trata de aquel día en que los discípulos de Jesús se encontraban en Jerusalén, en la fiesta de agradecimiento por las cosechas. Habían pasado siete semanas desde que su Señor fuera condenado y crucificado. Aun seguían dudosos acerca de su misión; y es  en medio de la multitud cuando ocurre este fenómeno. La imagen de las lenguas como de fuego que distinguían a los seguidores de Jesús, ha sido motivo de innumerables pinturas. En ocasiones hasta se han identificado como el derramamiento mismo del Espíritu Santo, el fuego es símbolo de lo que ilumina y purifica, y es signo de la presencia y el llamado divinos. Aquel acontecimiento extraordinario propició que la multitud reflexionara con atención y humidad sobre las palabras de los apóstoles. Y en esa palabra proclamada con poder donde se derrama el Espíritu Santo.

Vivimos hoy en día en el mundo de las imágenes, como la TV, el cine, el internet. Pero es notable cómo ya en la antigüedad la imagen y las palabras, así como las sensaciones, se conjugaban para que se comprendiera con claridad el mensaje: Jesús es el Salvador. No cabe duda que así como aquella multitud comenzó a reunirse al reconocer a Jesús en las palabras de los apóstoles, también hoy las iglesias y la humanidad toda están llamados a  proclamar con palabras y hechos la fe, la unidad en Dios. Sólo así será fiel a Jesucristo.

Oración: Mi buen Dios, te pedimos hoy  que tu amor nunca deje de ser, que tu presencia siempre vaya en medio nuestro. Amén.
