Ash Wednesday. The Beginning of Lent

BELIEVING IN HIM

Luke 4:31-37

Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed.”

History repeats itself. After more than two thousand years, there are still people who do not believe in Christ. The miracles, the teachings, the sacrifice, the resurrection, were not enough for those who do not want to believe. Would Jesus have failed to do all that was necessary for everyone to believe? Not at all. There is a design of God in this, even if it is difficult for us to understand.

Unbelief in Jesus does not exist only among unbelievers. Paradoxical as it may seem, there are many unbelieving believers, who claim to believe in Him, but deny Him in their actions, doubt His promises, ridicule His teachings, attack His values. They claim to believe in Him and promote violence, war, hunger and injustice. They call themselves Christians and work for death and its empire.

Believing in Him implies obeying Him. Believing in Him implies believing in His words, His promises, His values. Believing in Him implies a commitment to life and its promotion, to justice and its fruit, peace, love and neighbor.

 

Prayer: I believe in you, Lord. I believe in your love, in your power and in your mercy. Today in particular, we acknowledge our humble condition. May we continue to reveal your work in our midst. Amen.

CREER EN ÉL

Lucas 4:31-37

Even after A pesar de que Jesús había hecho tan grandes señales milagrosas delante de ellos, no creían en él; pues tenía que cumplirse lo que escribió el profeta Isaías: “Señor, ¿quién ha creído nuestro mensaje? ¿A quién ha revelado el Señor su poder?”

Juan 12:37-38

La historia se repite. Después de más de dos mil años, aún hay personas que no llegan a creer en Cristo. No fueron suficientes los milagros, las enseñanzas, el sacrificio, la resurrección. No son suficientes para aquel  que no quiere creer. ¿Habría fracasado Jesús al no hacer todo lo necesario para que todos creyeran? No, en absoluto. Hay un designio de Dios en esto, aunque a nosotros nos cueste entenderlo.

La incredulidad hacia Jesús no sólo existe en los incrédulos. Por paradójico que pueda parecer, hay muchos creyentes incrédulos, los cuales dicen creer en Él, pero lo niegan en sus acciones, dudan de sus promesas, ridiculizan sus enseñanzas, atentan contra sus valores. Afirman creer en Él y fomentan la violencia, promueven la guerra, el hambre y la injustica. Se dicen cristianos y trabajan en pro de la muerte y su imperio.

Creer en Él implica obedecerle. Creer en Él implica creer en sus palabras, sus promesas, sus valores. Creer en Él implica un compromiso con la vida y su promoción, con la justicia y su fruto, la paz, con el amor y con el prójimo.

 

Oración: Creo en ti, Señor. Creo en tu amor, en tu poder y en tu misericordia. Hoy en especial, reconocemos nuestra humilde condición. Permite que sigamos revelando tu obra en medio nuestro. Amén.
