NONSENSICAL PRAYERS?

MARK 10:13-16

Jesus said: Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.

Matthew 19:14 (NRSV)

Last week I took my son out to eat at a restaurant. My little boy asked if he could bless the table before eating what was brought to us. I asked him to do so, and this was his prayer: “Dear Lord, I give thanks to you for the food that we are about to eat, and I would thank you even more if Mama gives us ice cream for dessert. Amen.”

Along with some laughter coming from the tables next to me, I heard a woman say, “Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Look at asking God for ice cream! What nonsense!”

Naturally I bought ice cream for dessert. Then, after finishing his ice cream, my son put some of his ice cream onto one of the plates on the table. Without saying a word, he walked through the restaurant and stopped in front of the woman who had expressed that it was nonsense to pray for ice cream. With a great big smile, he told her, “This is for you. Sometimes, ice cream is also good for the soul, and mine has had enough.”

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the innocence of children, enable us to listen to you and to hope in you. Amen.

¿ORACIONES SIN SENTIDO?

Marcos 10:13-16

WHO WOULD BE THE MOST TRUSTWORTHY!

Hebrews 12

See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God

Hebrews 12:15 (NRSV)

In these days we often find people who say, “I don’t believe in anything or anyone.” However, they are confident in the bus or train schedule, or in the diagnosis of a doctor. And so, it dos not really seem possible to live without trusting in something or someone. And the question we must ask ourselves is whether the object of our trust is truly worthy of it.

All of humanity believes in something, whether it be political, philosophical, or some other ideas; however, what is essential is not to believe, if one thinks of it as a rational acceptance of certain postulates, but rather putting our trust in what is true, what is reliable.

So then, who would be more reliable than God himself, who has been at the side of humanity for more than two thousand years and who died on the cross for us? As Peter would say in his time: to whom shall we go? Only in Jesus do we find word of eternal life, but we are exhorted to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, recognizing that it is God himself who is at work in us, enabling us to will and to do the work. (Philippians 2:12-13)

Prayer: Father, forgive us our sins and make us better human beings every day. We ask especially today for your Church. Bless those whom you have called to bear witness of your grace. Amen.

¡QUIÉN SERÍA MÁS FIABLE!

Hebreos 12

IN THE HANDS OF GOD

Genesis 45:4-8

So then, it was not you who sent me, but God…

Genesis 45:8

There is no doubt that, among all the biblical stories, the story of Joseph is one of the most captivating, and moreover, filled with great lessons to be learned.

We often repeat many texts that we have memorized about the permanent presence of God among us. We say we trust in his help, in his promises; and yet, we often see that many brothers, at the hour of trial, when adversity envelops us, feel defeated, weakened, and make it clear that the reality of a God who works for the good of those who love him, is not a fact in their lives

Joseph went through the most unimaginable difficulties, and yet his trust in God did not waver. Let us ask the Lord that truly when we say: “...Thy will be done ,” we may be willing to endure any trial in the certainty that we are instruments in His hands.

Joseph’s difficult experience can be seen, in the light of the facts, as divine design. Don’t you think it is so in your own life.

Prayer:  Lord, today we ask you to give us courage to accept and fulfill your purposes. Amen
