All Saints’ Day

AS WORKING FOR THE LORD

COLOSSIANS 3: 17, 23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…

At the start of the day, as I looked at the altar I was surprised by the floral arrangement, which was a branch of flowers taken from the church’s garden.  It looked simple and precious. In the same way, we are surprised each Sunday by the ingenuity and the holy hands of a sister in Christ who gathers the flowers she finds along the pathway to church in order to delight us with the most beautiful flower arrangements.

These brought to mind the way in which we can look at the things around us and take advantage of them. Teacher Castellanos used to say that we should not lose the ability of being surprised. And there are times when our lives are so void of feeling that we don’t allow ourselves to be surprised by the simple beauty of a twig, or of a green sprout in the middle of a ditch…Fortunately there are people in life who are surprised every day by daily miracles and who shake us up with their sensitivity.

The sister who inspired me to write this reflection not only allows herself to be surprised, but makes the ordinary and daily things take on a new meaning.

Through the inspiration by this witness, I invite us today to sanctify our lives through the work of our hands.  May everything that we do with our hands be done from our hearts; be it cooking or healing others or cultivating a garden or decorating the church sanctuary. Let us propose to always work for the Lord and that when people see the work of our hands, they may be stunned and say: “Oh, God exists and is marvelous!”

Prayer: Gracious God, we pray that you will place within us the desire to please you in everything that we do.  Grant that our eyes may be surprised and see you in everyday things and that our hands may be creative and show others your daily blessings. Amen.

Día de Todos los Santos

COMO PARA EL SEÑOR

COLOSENSES 3: 17, 23-24

Hagan lo que hagan, trabajen de buena gana,

como para el Señor…

Comenzó un día, al mirar hacia el altar me sorprendió el arreglo floral, era un ramo de flores y hojas tomadas del jardín de la Iglesia. Lucía sencillo y precioso. Así, cada domingo somos sorprendidos por el ingenio y las manos santas de una hermana que toma de las flores con las que se encuentra en el camino hacia el templo para deleitarnos con los más hermosos arreglos florales. Esto me hizo reflexionar en la manera en la que podemos mirar las cosas que nos rodean y aprovecharlas. El maestro Castellanos decía que no debemos perder la capacidad de asombro. Y es que en ocasiones nuestra vida está tan estéril de sentido que no nos dejamos sorprender por la belleza sencilla de un romerillo, o el brote verde en medio de una cuneta… Afortunadamente en la vida existen personas que se sorprenden cada día con milagros cotidianos y nos estremecen con su sensibilidad. La hermana que me inspiró en esta reflexión no sólo se deja sorprender, sino que en sus manos toma un nuevo sentido lo cotidiano y común.

Inspirados en este testimonio les invito hoy a santificar nuestra vida a través del trabajo de nuestras manos. ¡Que todo lo que hagamos con nuestras manos, lo hagamos de corazón; ya sea cocinar, sanar a otros, cultivar un jardín, decorar el templo… Hagámonos el propósito de trabajar siempre para el Señor y que cuando las personas se encuentren con la obra de nuestras manos puedan asombrarse y decir: ¡Oh, Dios existe y es maravilloso!

Oración: Te pedimos, Dios bueno, que pongas en nosotros el deseo de agradarte en todo lo que hagamos. Que nuestros ojos puedan sorprenderse y verte en lo cotidiano y que nuestras manos sean creativas para mostrarle a los demás tus bendiciones cada día. Amén.
