PRAY FOR CONVERSIONS OF THE HEART

1 THESSALONIANS 5

 …encourage the timid, help the weak…

1 Thessalonians 5:14

In the origin and the heart of ecumenism, there is an urgent call to repentance and conversion. We must know how to mutually challenge one another in our Christian communities, as Paul invites us in his first letter to the Thessalonians. If one or the other is sowing division, it must be corrected; if some fear the implications behind a costly reconciliation, they should be encouraged. Why hide it?  If the divisions between Christians persist, it is also due to lack of willingness, of a determined commitment to ecumenical dialogue and even simply to lack of prayer for unity.

The bible tells us that God sent Jonah to warn Nineveh and how the entire city later repented.  In the same way, Christian communities should commit themselves to listen to the Word of God and to repent.  Throughout the last century, the prophets of unity did not fail to remind unfaithful Christians of their disunity and of the urgency of reconciliation.

Like the vigorous intervention of Jesus in the temple, the call to reconciliation among Christians can seriously disrupt our certainties. We also need to purify ourselves. We should learn how to purify our hearts of everything that impedes it from being a genuine house of prayer, concerned about the unity of all nations.

Prayer: Lord, you wish for the truth at the bottom of a human being, in the secrecy of our hearts; you teach us wisdom.    Grant that we be inspired to seek the pathways of unity.  Show us the necessary conversions for reconciliation.  Give to each of us a renewed heart, a heart that is truly ecumenical, we pray. Amen.

  Animad a los tímidos y sostened a los débiles

En el origen y en el corazón del ecumenismo, se encuentra una llamada urgente al arrepentimiento y a la conversión. Es necesario sabernos desafiar mutuamente en nuestras comunidades cristianas, como Pablo nos invita en la primera carta a los Tesalonicenses. Si uno u otro siembra división, que se corrija; si algunos tiene miedo a lo que implica una reconciliación costosa, que se animen. ¿Por qué ocultarlo? Si las divisiones entre cristianos permanecen, es también por falta de voluntad, de comprometerse con determinación en el diálogo ecuménico e incluso simplemente en la oración por la  unidad.

La Biblia cuenta que Dios envió a Jonás para interpelar a Nínive y cómo luego toda la ciudad se arrepintió. De la misma manera, las comunidades cristianas deben ponerse a la escucha de la Palabra de Dios y arrepentirse. Durante el último siglo, los profetas de la unidad no faltaron para recordar a los cristianos la infidelidad de su desunión y la urgencia de la reconciliación.

A imagen de la intervención vigorosa de Jesús en el templo, la llamada a la reconciliación de los cristianos puede seriamente trastornar nuestras certezas. Necesitamos purificamos también. Debemos saber purificar nuestro corazón de todo lo que le impide ser una auténtica casa de oración, preocupada por la unidad de todas las naciones.

Oración: Señor, tú quieres la verdad en el fondo del ser; en el secreto de nuestro corazón; tú nos enseñas la sabiduría. Haz que nos animemos en los caminos de la unidad. Muéstranos las conversiones necesarias para la reconciliación. Da a cada uno un corazón renovado, un corazón verdaderamente ecuménico; así te lo pedimos. Amén.
