1 THESSALONIANS 5:12-22

1 Thessalonians  5:17

Paul wrote: Be always joyful. Never cease to pray. Remain in a constant state of thanks, because this is what God wants of us as Christians. His letter was directed to a community of the faithful anxious about death. Today’s reading offers some elements as a response to this question. Our whole life should be a search for God, with the conviction that if we search we will find.

At the height of his exile, when everything seemed useless and hopeless, the prophet Isaiah  proclaimed: Search for the Lord until you find him; invoke him while he is near. The Lord is near his people even if they’re in exile, and exhorts them to draw near to him in prayer, and to follow his orders so that they might know his mercy and forgiveness. Today many live as exiles, and one of the most terrible instances is that of the lack of unity among Christians.

As Christians in the search for unity, we meditate on these readings to find God’s will in respect to ourselves in Christ Jesus. The unity that we should seek is that unity Christ has appointed. The celebration of the Octave of Prayer for the unity of Christians is the mirror of the biblical concept of plenitude – that is – the hope that one day there will be a reply to our prayer of unity.   

Prayer:  Lord of unity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we ask without ceasing that everyone may be one, as You are one. Father, hear our cry when we seek you. Christ, lead us to the unity you desire for us. Holy Spirit, endeavor that we never become dispirited. Amen.

1 Tesalonicenses  5:17

Pablo ha escrito: Estad siempre alegres. No ceséis de orar. Manteneos en contaste  acción de gracias, porque esto es lo que Dios quiere de vosotros como cristianos. Su carta va dirigida a una comunidad de fieles ansiosos ante la muerte. Las lecturas de hoy ofrecen algunos elementos como respuesta a esta cuestión. Toda nuestra vida debe ser una búsqueda de Dios, en la convicción de que si buscamos, encontraremos. En pleno exilio, cuando todo parece inútil y sin esperanza, el profeta Isaías proclama: Buscad al Señor mientras se le encuentra, invocadlo mientras esté cerca.  Incluso en el exilio, el Señor está cerca de su pueblo y lo exhorta a dirigirse a Él en la oración, y a seguir sus órdenes para que pueda conocer su misericordia y su perdón. Hoy vivimos muchos exilios, y uno de los más terribles es el de la falta de unidad entre los cristianos.

Como cristianos en búsqueda de la unidad, meditamos sobre estas lecturas para encontrar la voluntad de Dios respecto a nosotros en Cristo Jesús. La unidad que debemos buscar es la unidad tal y como Cristo la quiere. La celebración del octavario  de oración por la unidad de los cristianos es el reflejo del concepto bíblico de plenitud, es decir, la esperanza de que un día habrá respuesta a nuestra oración por la unidad.

Oración: Señor de la unidad, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, te pedimos sin cesar para que todos seamos uno como Tú eres uno. Padre, oye nuestra llamada cuando te buscamos. Cristo, condúcenos a la unidad que deseas para nosotros. Espíritu Santo, procura que no nos desalentemos nunca. Amén.
