PRAY BECAUSE YOU NEED TO

 1  THESSALONIANS 5

Help the weak

1 Thessalonians 5:14 

Deeply afflicted by her barrenness, Hannah begged God to give her a child:  her prayer was heard, and eventually Samuel (whose name means “I asked the Lord for him”) was born.  In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus himself tells us that he who asks, receives; we thus address God in prayer so that he will respond to our needs. The response may not correspond to what we hope, but God always answers us.  The power of prayer is immense, especially when it is tied to service.  The Gospel teaches us that Christ wants us to love one another and to help one another.  In the letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, the topic of service is reiterated with the command:  Help the weak. We know that it is possible to respond in an ecumenical and concrete fashion to misery and helplessness.  Churches of different traditions often work hand in hand, but in some instances their testimony is seriously weakened by their lack of unity. When we wish to pray together, we are at times deeply distrustful with respect to the different forms of prayer that we find in other Christian traditions; Catholics addressing their prayers to God through the intercession of the saints or of Mary, the mother of Jesus; the prayers of the orthodox liturgies; Pentecostal prayers; etc.

Without a doubt, faith in the power of prayer is a common element in all our traditions and it can contribute greatly to the cause of Christian unity, once we have understood and overcome our differences.  In our prayers, we should support all dialogues that keep our churches above the differences of opinion that in turn keep us from gathering together at the Lord’s table. Jointly celebrating the memory of Christ and raising our communal thanksgiving toward him will allow us to take a great step forward on the path of unity.

Prayer: Lord, help us to be truly one when we pray for the healing of our world, about divisions between our churches and for our own healing.  In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sostened a los débiles

Profundamente afligida por su esterilidad, Ana imploró a Dios para que le concediera un niño: su oración fue escuchada y, pasados unos días, nació Samuel (que significa “al Señor se lo pedí”). En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús mismo nos dice que quien pide recibe; así en la oración, nos dirigimos a Dios para que responda a nuestras necesidades. La respuesta puede no corresponder a lo que esperamos, pero Dios nos responde siempre. El poder de la oración es inmenso, sobre todo cuando está vinculado al servicio. El Evangelio nos enseña que Cristo quiere que nos amemos y que nos ayudemos unos a otros. En la carta de Pablo a los Tesalonicenses, el tema del servicio se reanuda con el imperativo: Sostened a los débiles. Sabemos que es posible responder de manera ecuménica y concreta a la miseria y al desamparo. Las Iglesias de tradiciones diferentes trabajan a menudo mano a mano, pero en algunas circunstancias su testimonio es seriamente debilitado por su falta de unidad. Cuando queremos orar juntos, a veces somos profundamente desconfiados respecto a las distintas formas de oración que encontramos en otras tradiciones cristianas: las oraciones de los católicos dirigidos a Dios por la intersección de los santos o de María, la madre de Jesús; las oraciones litúrgicas ortodoxas; las oraciones pentecostales; etc.

Es indudable que la fe en el poder de la oración es común al conjunto de nuestras tradiciones y puede contribuir mucho a la causa de la unidad cristiana, una vez que hayamos comprendido y superado nuestras diferencias. Debemos apoyar con nuestras oraciones todos los diálogos que mantienen nuestras Iglesias sobre las divergencias que impiden aún reunirnos en torno a la mesa del Señor. Celebrar juntos el memorial de Cristo y elevar hacia él nuestra común acción de gracias, nos permitirá realizar un gran paso adelante en el camino de la unidad.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a ser de verdad uno cuando rogamos por la curación de nuestro mundo, de las divisiones entre nuestras Iglesias y por nuestra propia curación. En el nombre de Jesucristo.  Amén.
