TWO DIFFERENT TEACHERS

JOHn 3:1-15

“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus,

“and do you not understand these things?”

John 3:10 (NIV)

This meeting between Nicodemus and Jesus shows the basic differences between Israel’s traditional teaching perspective and the new proposal of Jesus. Nicodemus, a man with an important position among the Jews, sets aside all his prejudices and social distance to approach Jesus, a humble Nazarene, whom he recognizes as a man of God. Although he may have come to Jesus by night, so no one could see him, to protect his reputation, I prefer to interpret it symbolically, as arriving in the inability to orient himself, arriving amid uncertainty, at a difficult crossroads of his life. Seen in this manner, Jesus’ answers to his questions lead him toward a new manner of viewing life: the literal and simplistic understanding of life and the scriptures no longer count, what really counts is allowing the Spirit, which is like the wind that blows freely, so we can be reborn to a new way of thinking and acting.

Brothers and sisters, today God is calling us again to teach according to the Spirit. Let us set aside traditional teaching models and develop programs as dynamic as the wind, to refresh our boys and girls, and our teenagers and all generations. We must be reborn to a renewed conviction of education in the values of the kingdom of God to bring us closer to the transcendental teaching model: Jesus of Nazareth.

Prayer: O God, our teacher and friend, renew our vision as teachers so that we may worthily teach the messages of your kingdom. We ask this humbly. Amen.

Este encuentro entre Nicodemo y Jesús marca las diferencias esenciales entre la perspectiva pedagógica tradicional de Israel y la nueva propuesta de Jesús. Nicodemo, un hombre de importante posición entre los judíos, deja a un lado todos sus prejuicios y distancia social para acercarse a Jesús, un humilde nazareno, en quien ha reconocido un hombre de Dios. Aunque venir a Jesús de noche puede referirse al cuidado de que nadie lo viera, y guardar así su reputación, yo prefiero interpretarlo simbólicamente, como llegar en medio de la incapacidad de orientarse, llegar en medio de la incertidumbre, en una encrucijada difícil de la vida. Así visto, las respuestas de Jesús a sus preguntas lo guían hacia una nueva manera de concebir la existencia: no vale más la comprensión literal y reduccionista de la vida y de las Escrituras, lo realmente valedero es dejar que sea el Espíritu, que es como el  viento que sopla libremente, el que nos haga renacer a una nueva manera pensar y actuar.

Hermano, hermana, hoy Dios nos convoca nuevamente a educar según el Espíritu. Dejemos a un lado los modelos formativos esquemáticos y desarrollemos programas dinámicos como el viento, para que refresquen a nuestros niños y niñas, a nuestros adolescentes y jóvenes, y a todas las generaciones por igual. Debemos renacer a una convicción renovada de la educación en los valores del reinado de Dios para acercarnos a ese modelo pedagógico imprescindible: Jesús de Nazaret.

Oración: Oh Dios, maestro y amigo, renueva nuestras visiones como maestros y maestras para enseñar dignamente los  mensajes de tu reino. Humildemente lo pedimos. Amén.
