REMEMBERING PENTECOST

Acts 2:1-21

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

            We celebrate Pentecost Sunday in May. However, the message behind what happened there is so important we can take it up again. We recognize that day in which believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages,  according to  the ability they were given by the spirit. In that time and place, the promise of Joel 2:28 was fulfilled. That event from two thousand years ago is a testament to how the Spirit miraculously worked among a diverse group of people  in first century Jerusalem. But Pentecost goes on giving testimony of what the spirit does now; and correspondingly the Church recognizes that the same Spirit that made that happen is at work in our  world. 

            Pentecost showed that the good news of God’s love, and compassion was translatable to all peoples and cultures. This invites us to reflect on the paths that the Church has walked, since the danger of accommodating and justifying itself continues. But the Spirit breathes again to send us outside the walls of the temple and with a prophetic voice to serve, dialogue and respect those who are speaking a different language; those who have a different position. God teaches us to value them.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, let us not lose the ability to wonder at your works. Let us not forget the wonders that you have done and that you have in our favor. Amen.

RECORDANDO PENTECOSTES

Y fueron todos llenos del Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les  daba ...

Hechos 2:4

            Celebramos el Domingo de Pentecostés en Mayo. Sin embargo, el mensaje que encierra lo que ocurrió allí es de tanta importancia, que podemos volver a retomarlo. Reconocemos aquel día en que los creyenrtes fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y empezaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según la capacidad que les daba el Espíritu. En ese momento y lugar, se cumplióó la promesa de Joel 2.28. Ese evento de hace dos mil años es un testimonio de cómo el Espíritu obró milagrosamente entre un grupo diverso de personas en la Jerusalén del primer siglo. Pero Pentecostés sigue consistiendo en dar testimonio de lo que el Espíritu hace ahora; y lo que le corresponde reconocer a la Iglesia es que el mismo Espíritu que hizo que eso ocurriera, sigue obrando en nuestro mundo.

            Pentecostés mostró que la buena nueva del amor, el perdón y la compasión de Dios era traducible a todos los pueblos y culturas. Esto nos invita a reflexionar en los caminos por los que la Iglesia ha andado, pues continúa el peligro de acomodarse y justificarse. Pero el Espíritu vuelve a soplar para enviarnos fuera de las paredes del templo y con voz profética servir, dialogar y respetar a quienes están hablando en una lengua distinta, a quienes tienen una posición distinta, y Dios nos enseña a entenderles y valorarles.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, que no perdamos la capacidad de asombro ante tus obras, que no olvidemos las maravillas que has hecho y que tienes en nuestro favor. Amén.
