WORLDLY HOLINESS

Micah 6:6-8

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

            How much of our life as Christians is mere empty and devitalized religion? How much is powerful, living, and abundant faith? Prayer, reading the Word, sacraments, attendance at worship, service in the midst of the world, even the effort to gain lives for Christ can be an act of religion or an action of faith. All depends on its origin, its movement, its purpose. A prayer performed according to a formula, to fulfill a custom, is a religious prayer; a prayer which rises in search of communion with God, discovering God’s will, and obeying God at all costs is a prayer of faith. A service offered without love to other people, is more a way of quieting the conscience and pleasing a demanding God; a service which is offered freely in humility and love, in obedience and response to Christ’s love, is a work of faith.

            The Christian must be “non-religious,” neither a penitent nor a saint in the traditional manner, but one who lives in the midst of the world. This non-religious Christian should not live for himself, but rather with God accept suffering for the world and living before God in obedience and “worldly holiness” in the midst of the situation that is his lot.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to ground our lives in a meaning based in our faith, in Jesus name. Amen.

LA SANTIDAD MUNDANA

Miqueas 6:6-8

 

… él te ha declarado lo que es bueno, y que pide Jehová de ti:  solamente hacer justicia, y amar misericordia, y humillarte ante tu Dios

Miqueas 6:8

            ¿Cuánto de nuestra vida como cristianos es mera religión vacía y desvitalizada? ¿Cuánto es fe poderosa, viva y abundante? La oración, la lectura de la Palabra, los  sacramentos, la asistencia a los cultos de adoración, el servicio en medio del mundo, aun el esfuerzo por ganar vidas para Cristo pueden ser un acto de religión o una acción de fe. Todo depende de su origen, de su movimiento, de su propósito. Una oración que se realiza para llenar una fórmula, para cumplir una costumbre, es una oración religiosa; una oración que se eleva en busca de comunión con Dios con un deseo de alabarle, descubrir su voluntad y obedecerle a todo riesgo es una oración de fe. Un servicio que se ofrece sin amar a los hombres, más bien como manera de acallar la conciencia y agradar a un Dios exigente,  es un servicio de carácter religioso; un servicio que se ofrece voluntariamente en humildad y amor, en obediencia y respuesta al amor de Cristo, es obra de fe.

            El cristiano debe ser un “no religioso”;  no un penitente ni un santo al modo tradicional,  si no uno que vive en  medio del mundo. Este cristiano no religioso no debe vivir para sí, sino aceptar sufrir con Dios por el mundo y vivir frente a Dios en obediencia y “santidad mundana”, en medio de la situación que le ha tocado vivir.

 

Oración: Señor,  ayúdanos a que nuestras vidas tengan un sentido basado en nuestra fe. Por Jesús, amén.
