PERFECTING THE BELIEVERS

Ephesians  4: 11-13

to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ

            The first Letter to the Corinthians in its twelfth chapter contains a wonderful dissertation about the gifts of the spirit. In a masterful way, it takes for granted that everything that God does is done for the best benefit of the community, not to enhance or exalt anyone. “In the Church there are different gifts . . . . There are different ways of serving, but all commissioned by the same Lord. And there different manifestations of power . . . .  God gives to each some proof of the Spirit for the benefit of all.”

            As the text lays out, the central objective of the gifts that God bestows is the perfection of believers for the mutual work that falls to them. To make us perfect! Can anyone achieve this? Is it necessary? The response is a resounding YES. Accepting the gospel makes us “New creations,” but we all know that we are not “finished” products but that we are entering a new life where we are climbing toward a mature Christianity.

            Different texts in the New Testament show this reality that the Christian life is always a process. The sanctification of the believer does not have a merely personal end; mature Christianity is achieved and is lived personally but is linked to the greater purpose of growing the WHOLE BODY.

 

Prayer: O God, we await your gifts; help us to use them for the good of your work. Amen.

PERFECCIONAR A LOS CREYENTES

Efesios  4: 11-13

...a fin de perfeccionar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo

 Efesios 4: 12

            La primera carta a los Corintios, en su cap. 12, contiene una magnífica disertación con referencia a la cuestión de los dones del Espíritu, y de manera magistral deja por sentado que todo lo que Dios hace lo realiza para el mejor provecho de la colectividad, no para realzar a nadie o encumbrarlo. “Hay en la iglesia diferentes dones ... Hay diferentes maneras de servir, pero todas por encargo de un mismo Señor. Y hay diferentes manifestaciones de poder... Dios da a cada uno alguna prueba de la presencia del Espíritu, para provecho de todos”.

            Como expresa el texto, el objetivo central de los dones que Dios otorga es el de perfeccionar a los creyentes para la obra en común que les corresponde. ¡Hacernos perfectos! ¿Podráá alguien lograrlo?, ¿es algo necesario? La respuesta es un: sí rotundo. Al aceptar el evangelio nos hacemos “nuevas criaturas”, pero todos sabemos que no somos productos ”acabados”, sino que entramos en una vida en la cual vamos ascendiendo hacia la madurez cristiana.

            Diversos textos en el Nuevo Testamento indican esta realidad de que la vida cristiana siempre está en proceso. La santificación del creyente no tiene un fin meramente personal; la madurez cristiana se alcanza y se vive en lo personal, pero vinculada al propósito mayor: que TODO el cuerpo crezca.
