First Sunday of Advent

THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN

Luke 21:25-36

You also must be ready, because the Human One is coming at a time when you don’t expect him.

            Advent is the liturgical season that serves as preparation for Christmas celebrations.  It intends to make us conscious of two things at the very least:  the first coming of the Messiah, the baby Jesus who changed history, and his other coming as Lord of lords, to give to the Father all of the things according to the divine purpose of a redeemed world, that lives in the shalom of God.

            I suggest that this is not something to ignore, for the gospel demands of us that we should be prepared to live in an ongoing alertness, and to avoid a life that only thinks about satisfying material desires, as well as to avoid excessive worries as if our lives did not depend on Jesus Christ whom we claim to adore and follow. 

            It is not a question of fears so stoked by the prophesies that the second coming of Christ is already near and the one who is not on his path will go to hell.  It is a question of simply being prepared, as the passage teaches.  Advent encourages us to remember that Christ did not “leave”, but that his presence continues to be alive and active in this world through his Church.  Thus, the testimony that we offer through our ministries and actions are of high value.

 

Prayer: Bless your people, Lord, with the capacity to prepare ourselves for your coming.  Amen.

Primer Domingo de Adviento

LA VENIDA DEL HIJO DEL HOMBRE

Lucas 21:25-36

También ustedes deben estar preparados, porque el Hijo del Hombre vendrá cuando ustedes menos lo esperan.

Lucas 12:40

            Adviento es la estación litúrgica que sirve de preparación para las celebraciones navideñas. Intenta hacernos conscientes de, al menos, dos cosas: el primer advenimiento del Mesías, el niño Jesús que cambió la historia, y su otro advenimiento como Señor de señores, para entregar al Padre todas las cosas de acuerdo al propósito divino de un mundo redimido, que vive en el Shalom de Dios.

            Puesto que no es algo a ignorar, el evangelio nos demanda que debemos estar preparados, hay que vivir en alerta perenne, y evitar una vida que solo piense en satisfacer los gustos materiales, pero evitar así mismo el exceso de preocupaciones como si nuestras vidas no dependieran de ese Jesucristo al que decimos adorar y seguir.

            No es cuestión de temores tan atizados por quienes auguran que la segunda venida de Cristo ya está cerca y quien no esté en sus caminos irá al infierno. Es cuestión de estar preparados simplemente, tal como enseña el texto bíblico. Adviento nos anima a recordar que Cristo no se “fue”, sino que su presencia sigue viva y activa en este mundo a través de su Iglesia. Por tanto, es de supremo valor el testimonio que demos en nuestros ministerios y accionar.

 

Oración: Bendice a tu pueblo, Señor, con la capacidad de prepararse para tu venida. Amén.
