A new Proposal

Today, many people have distinct ideas about fasting. There are those who raise it as a spiritual discipline or who impose it as an obligatory practice; on the other hand, there are those who ignore the subject and treat it with complete indifference.

Disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees practiced fasting on their own initiative to hasten the coming of the Kingdom. Instead, Jesus offers a new proposal, and the behavior of his disciples was scandalous.

Jesus himself fasted in the desert and taught about fasting in the Sermon on the Mount, but not as a ceremonial or spiritual act; rather as something to be frequently practiced with other acts in the Christian life such as charity and prayer.

Apparently, for Jesus, the fasting practiced by his contemporaries was a tradition that belonged to the realm of “the old” and did not fit into the newness of the Kingdom. When pious acts are a patch, there is always tensions, as with old and new cloth.

God’s Reign is not sustained by patches, but requires total conversion of heart.

 

Prayer: Lord, let our conversion be sincere and total. Transform our hearts into new reservoirs fit to receive the newness of your Gospel. Amen.

Una nueva propuesta

Muchas personas tienen hoy conceptos distintos acerca delayuno. Hay quienes lo exaltan como disciplina espiritual o loimponen como práctica obligatoria; y por otro lado estánquienes ignoran el tema por completo tratándolo conindiferencia.

Los discípulos de Juan Bautista y los fariseos practicaban ayunos por propia iniciativa para apresurar la venida delReino. En cambio Jesús trae una nueva propuesta y el comportamiento de sus discípulos resulta escandaloso.

El propio Jesús ayunó en el desierto y enseñó acerca delayuno en el Sermón del Monte, pero no como un acto ceremonial o espiritualista: acompaña esta práctica de otros actos frecuentes en la vida del cristiano como son la caridad y la oración.

Al parecer, para Jesús, el ayuno que practicaban sus contemporáneos era una tradición que pertenecía al ámbito de “lo viejo” y que no encajaba en la novedad del Reino. Cuando las prácticas piadosas son un parche, siempre hay tensión. Como entre un paño viejo y uno nuevo.

El Reino de Dios no se sostiene con parches, sino que requiere conversión total del corazón

 

Oración: Señor, permite en nosotros una conversión sincera y total. Transforma nuestros corazones en depósitos nuevos que sean aptos para recibir la novedad de tu Evangelio. Amén.
