Neither Temple nor Sabbath: Jesus!

Matthew 12: 1-8

I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you  had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath

Today, the current of religious fundamentalism, characterized by rigidity, violence, and exclusion is strongly permeating many communities of faith. This whole situation has been an attack against the liberating practices of the gospel of Jesus, who has already bet on hope, full life and community welfare.

As at so many other times, when the disciples were gathering ears of wheat to eat on the Sabbath day, Jesus is questioned by those who knew the Jewish laws, when the law and the religion established the prohibition of working on this day. However, Jesus opts for justice and for life: the need to give food to satisfy hunger. Respect for human beings, and therefore for their dignity, is the greatest sign of love of neighbor, to which Jesus invites his followers on a daily basis. Solidarity and mercy are ethical principles proclaimed by the Son of Man!

For Jesus, this is a certainty: Every day is good and acceptable for doing good! Fundamentalist ideas and practices cannot overshadow the brightness of Jesus’ light and his eagerness to promote the values of the Kingdom of God, at all times... at all times. Today let us walk with Jesus! Also on Sundays . . . on Thursdays . . . and even on Saturdays.

 

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are grateful to be your friends on the way. May we always be grateful for the value of life, love and justice. In your name, Amen.

Ni Templo ni sábado; ¡Jesús!

Mateo 12: 1-8

Pues yo les digo que aquí está uno más grande que el templo. Si ustedes supieran lo que significa: “Lo que pido de ustedes es misericordia y no sacrificios”, no condenarían a los que no son culpables. Sepan que el Hijo del hombre es Señor del sábado.

En la actualidad la corriente del fundamentalismo religioso está calando con fuerza en el interior de muchas comunidades de fe, caracterizándose por la rigidez, la violencia y laexclusión. Toda esta situación ha atentado contra las prácticas liberadoras del evangelio de Jesús; quien ha apostado , ya puesta, por la esperanza, la vida plena y el bienestar común.

Como otras tantas veces, Jesús es cuestionado por los conocedores de las leyes judías, al estar los discípulos recogiendo espigas de trigo para comer en el día de reposo.En aquellos tiempos, la ley y la religión establecían la prohibición de trabajar en este día. Sin embargo, Jesús opta por la justicia y por la vida: la necesidad de dar alimento para saciar el hambre. El respeto al ser humano, y por ende, a su dignidad, es la mayor muestra de amor al prójimo, a la queJesús cotidianamente invita a sus seguidores. ¡La solidaridad y la misericordia son principios éticos que proclama el Hijo del Hombre!

Para Jesús, esto es una certeza ¡Todos los días son buenos y aceptados para hacer el bien! Las ideas y las prácticas fundamentalistas no pueden opacar el brillo de la luz de Jesús y sus ansias por promover los valores del Reino de Dios, entodo tiempo…a toda hora. ¡Hoy caminemos junto a Jesús! También los domingos…los jueves…y hasta los sábados.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, estamos agradecidos por ser tus amigos/as del Camino. Que podamos apreciar siempre el valor de la vida, el amor y la justicia. En tu nombre, Amén.
