JESUS IS THE SIGN

Mark 8:11-13

With an impatient sigh, Jesus said, “Why does this generation look for a sign?”

Many times as a church we fall into the temptation of offering amazing signs that serve as testimony to show the power of God and ultimately, the power of the Church. This text speaks to us of Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees who asked him for signs. Jesus had just done a sign–feeding the 4000 with seven loaves of bread–but they needed signs, either to increase their faith or to argue about faith.

But Jesus considers faith as a condition for understanding signs. Faith does not depend on miracles, it is the miracles that depend on faith. Without faith, the signs don’t say anything.

Jesus has promised his presence will never be missing, and in that we have a fundamental sign. If he is in you, the entire community becomes a sign: the fraternal hug, sharing bread at the common table, a presence that consoles in the midst of affliction. When we discover Jesus in these simple gestures, we recognize the sign of his presence in our story.

Prayer: Lord, teach us to recognize you in our journey. Then we will see your signs and show them to the world. Amen.

JESÚS ES LA SEÑAL.

Marcos 8:11-13

Y gimiendo en su espíritu dijo: ¿Por qué pide Señal esta generación?

Muchas veces como iglesia, caemos en la tentación de ofrecer señales maravillosas que sirvan de testimonio para mostrar el poder de Dios y en última instancia el poder de la Iglesia. Este texto nos habla de la respuesta de Jesús ante los fariseos que pedían señales. Jesús acababa de hacerlas, la alimentación de los 4000 con 7 panes, pero ellos necesitaban señales, para aumentar su fe o para contender sobre la fe.

Jesús, sin embargo, considera la fe como condición para entender los signos. La fe no depende de los milagros; son los milagros los que dependen de la fe. Sin fe los signos no dicen nada.

Jesús ha prometido que jamás faltará su presencia, en ella tenemos el signo fundamental. Si Él está en ti, en la comunidad todo se hace signo: el abrazo fraterno, el compartir del pan en la mesa común, la presencia que consuela en medio de la aflicción. Cuando descubrimos a Jesús en estos gestos sencillos, reconocemos la señal de su presencia en nuestra historia.

Oración: Señor enséñanos a reconocerte en nuestro camino entonces veremos tus señales y las mostraremos al mundo. Amén.
