SERVE WITH LOVE

1 Peter 5:1-4

Don’t shepherd by ruling over those entrusted to your care, but become examples to the flock.

1 Peter 5:3 (CEB)

The elders were the officials of the church who provided supervision, protection, discipline, instruction and direction for other believers. Greeks and Jews gave great honor to the wise elders, and the Christian church continued this model of leadership. The elders assume a big responsibility and it was expected that they live exemplary lives.

Peter, one of the 12 disciples, was one of the three who saw the glory of Christ at the transfiguration. Often the mouthpiece of the disciples, Peter testified to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, preached on Pentecost and came to be a pillar of the church in Jerusalem. But to write to the elders he identified himself as an elder, not a superior. He asked them to “feed God’s sheep”, exactly what Jesus had said to him. His identification with the elders is a powerful example of Christian leadership, in which authority is based on service, not on power.

Prayer: Beloved Father, give us the capacity and show us what we need to serve you with love, delivering the best to each human being around us. Amen.

SERVIR CON AMOR

1 Pedro 5:1-4

Compórtense no como si ustedes fueran los dueños de los que están a su cuidado, sino procurando ser un ejemplo para ellos.

1 Pedro 5:3

Los ancianos eran oficiales de la iglesia que proporcionaban supervisión, protección, disciplina, instrucción y dirección a otros creyentes. Tanto griegos como judíos daban gran honor a los ancianos sabios, y la iglesia cristiana continuó ese modelo de liderazgo. Los ancianos asumen gran responsabilidad y se esperaba que vivieran vidas ejemplares.

Pedro, uno de los doce discípulos, fue uno de los tres que vio la gloria de Cristo en la transfiguración. Con frecuencia el portavoz de los apóstoles testificó de la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo, predicó en Pentecostés y llegó a ser una columna de la iglesia en Jerusalén. Pero al escribir a los ancianos se identifica como anciano, no como superior. Les pide "apacentad la grey de Dios", exactamente lo que Jesús le había dicho a él. Su identificación con los ancianos es un ejemplo poderoso del liderazgo cristiano, en el que la autoridad se basa en el servicio, no en el poder.

Oración: Padre amado, danos la capacidad y entrega que necesitamos para servirte con amor, entregando lo mejor, a cada ser humano que nos rodea. Amén.
